Indeed, my input levels were too low to get a "useful" sound.  I did two
things to solve the "problem".  First I sent the signal through a Mackie
mixer for amplification, then later I got rid of the mixer and re-adjusted
my concept of "useful".  Its worked perfectly ever since.

--PBr, still anxious for that pre-amp, though... ;)
