Try switching to a non-html compatible email or to an email that has 
the option to "keep attachments on server". also you could switch to 
getting an email digest of the days emails in one big email with only 
one ad attached. I think you can change the prefs at egroups to send 
you text only mail as well, this  would only send a two or three line 
text advertisment at the end of your emails instead of the gifs.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
