I would have to agree with this observation.  I had a guitarist recently plug
directly into a Sherman Filterbank and straight into the mixing board and he
commented on how cool it sounded.  Not only do you get some nice distortion but a
killer filter and envelope follower.  Pricey but surprisingly useful in lots of
situations.
