For anyone planning on getting into a little electronic tinkering, you may be interested in a book I just picked up called "Build your Own Test Equipment" by Carl J. Bergquist. It's pretty neat. It walks you through building a full-featured yet inexpensive powered prototyping station. Other projects are bench supplies, signal generator, transistor tester, digital multimeter, frequency counter, and more, and the book ends up with a project for a dual-trace solid-state scope that uses an LED matrix for a 'screen.' (I thought that last one might make a pretty cool module, but I doubt the resolution would be high enough to be useful.) All of the projects have pretty reasonable parts counts, yet appear to be full-featured devices.
