Of course Paul probably wouldn't use a rotary switch, but a rotary encoder or 
a pot which would work in steps. Exactly what I was thinking of, call it a 
"steps per volt selector" 0 to say 24 (although I'm not sure how "musical" 
intervals of say 5, 6 and 7 steps per octave would be).

C'mon Ken! You can do that with just a few MOTM modules and some spring 
reverb and a bit of echo I'd think. But I wonder how one could make that 
"Let's send an electrical charge through the hull!" sound (which sounds "so 
similar" to the alien falls against the panel in the Circuitry Room, and much 
pyrotechnics ensue)?
