MOTM XXX Sequencer

2001-01-30 by revtor@aol.com

Paul, any clue yet as to the # designation for the little seq?

--Here's a few thoughts on this whole thread--
-I think sequencers will cause the most controversey with regards to
feature set.. As we all now realize. : ) (Love these threads, so
many great ideas!!)
-I also think that for a simple sequencer as this one, the idea isn't
for musical production. Perhaps simple arpeggiated lines (Tangerine
Dream anyone?) but as someone pointed out, for actual musical scoring
there are much better soultions available. (Not that I wouldn't love
having a whole wing of sequencer modules and having a go at some
programmed SOB of my own..)
-So for a module like this we should perhaps focus our feature wishes
less on "Musical production" things and more on "sound design/mangling"
things. Using simple sequencers like this (I have some Concussor
super-simple 1x8 jobbies) as sound sources and modulation sources is
great fun. Running the clock rate up into audio range and doing all
sorts of stuff with the reset and individual trig outs makes for great
experimentation... So what I'm trying to say is that there are many
more uses for a sequencer than just controlling your oscs freq.
-Perhaps some of you out there with more "sound design" and modular
experience in general than me can speak up with a few simple features
aimed at making this MOTM XXX MiniSequencer a great "sysnthesis tool"
-Along this line of thought (synthesis), keeping it to just 8 steps and
using the other knob row for another purpose instead of making it 16
step might be better. Hell, I think it would be better off if we could
knock it down to half size and just 8 steps. Smaller, cheaper,
versatile. We are waiting for DoMOAS for our bassline/musical pattern
needs anyway right? (pattern memory, quantization, etc..)
-Small but open. If this goes down in a SuperMoe/modualr fashion then
we need it to be open for interconnection with other future module
offerings. Even if that required a PCB mounted socket to link modules
so they could share clock and other signals without taking up valuable
panel realestate. But modular is the key word here so many or any
normals at all might be kinda against the grain here. Who knows.

Well, I know what I want. I don't know what is feasible and whats not,
but these are just some humble opinions of mine on the whole matter.
The only thing I do know for sure is that however the thing turns out,
it will be sick. Paul always delivers the goods.

(Thanks for the compliment yesterday Larry!! I think variable gate
length (voltage controlable..yeah!) would be a great, odd feature.)
also the possibility of using (as in the Miniwave) rising voltage to
clock it forward, falling, the opposite etc.. would be nice in addition
to using clock pulses. Maybe a clock in jack, with a switch to select
trig mode or voltage mode. This scheme is similar to how JH's Int.
Scanner fades through the various inputs, correct? allright enough
from me...............
