OT: Rack Ears

2001-02-19 by alt-mode

Since this group seems to have a wealth of information, I have a question that I've
not been able to find the answer to just yet. Perhaps you folks can help?

I'm looking for some rack ears to go on a ~17" x 4U aluminum chassis. The box is
similar to those used on Serge panels. Since Serge sells the boxes, they must exist
from some supplier. I've thought about calling Rex but I haven't gone that far yet
(I don't want to know what he would charge for them!) Any pointers would be
helpful. I've done some searches on the Allied and Bud sites and come up empty.

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

   Eric

The Serge boxes are custom, as are most chassis.

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

I'd make my own. 1" x 1" aluminum angle is fairly common around home
improvement type stores in 4 and 8 foot lengths. Cut to length with saw,
drill a few holes and you are set.

It sounds kind of like you want what is pictured at the bottom of the page on
the url listed below. Penn Fabrication has all kinds of rack parts and
accessories. They require a $50 minimum order though.

If you have Microsoft Excel they have a pricelist in that format. I will
send you (Larry) one via private mail since I think I remember you saying you
were doing something in Excel. Anybody can e-mail them and they will send
out a pricelist. If you are into making synth cabinets, road cases or doing
19" rack stuff, they have just about everything and their prices are good.
If you don't need enough stuff to make their $50 limit, perhaps you can
piggyback ontop of somebody elses order as two other people did with me.

Thanks for the tips guys! I had forgotten about Penn Fabrication. I'll keep that
link for use in the future. The 1" Aluminum angle is probably the right solution
for this project and is sooo obvious I'm embarassed that I didn't think of myself!

Thanks again,
     Eric

Yeah. I've been using this 4U size and realized since I didn't have the front
panels, I could just get standard 4U rack panels from an LMB distributor
(about $18 each) and attach the box to them, thus eliminating the need for
separate rack ears. Of course you probably already have the front panels.

Yes. I appreciate Elhardt continually reminding
us of all the cool stuff they do have there. What
a collection of great stuff. :)
