somewhat OT: capacitor questions

2001-08-07 by klem klemmingberg

Here's what I'm wondering:
1. Does size matter? I've noticed a lot of the electrolytics in older gear
are rather largish compared to equivalently spec'ed contemporary
caps. Is there any performance difference?

2. I've seen some old ceramic caps marked (e.g.) "22m". What's
the M all about?

The smaller ones use better dielectric material. Higer voltage caps are
smaller, especially.

Back in the good old days, a pf (picofarad) was called a mmf
(milli-milli-farad). 22M = 22pf.
