[motm] HiHat, Cymbal and Kettle Drum (FM Tests)
2001-08-25 by elhardt@aol.com
Just for interest, below is an mp3 snippet of MOTM Frequency Modulated Synthesized HiHat, Cymbal, and Kettle Drum tests I was trying today. I was trying to come with a way to get metalic noise like partials. What I came up with was one oscillator generates a sawtooth output, but it is modulated with a sine from a second oscillator which in turn it modulated by white noise. Because I have 4 oscillators I was able to patch up two of these and tune them to different frequencies. So the HiHat and Kettle Drum use two metal/noise partials. I cheated on the cymbals and recorded a few of them at different frequencies and then mixed them together for a fuller sound. The Kettle Drum only sounds good on one note, and being monophonic forget about a drum roll. If I need another note, I need to resynthesize the patch for another pitch, but I did drop one hit down digitally. Kettle Drum needs to be heard loud with good bass. http://members.aol.com/elhardt3/fmtest.mp3
