Busted '420.

Busted '420.

2001-09-28 by Brousseau, Paul E (Paul)

Last night, I patched up my 420 for the first time, and had a bit of a bad
expirience. It's not calibrated, and just built. When I powered it up, the
other modules in the system worked OK. But when I patched something into
it, the power cut out on my entire system (8 modules total). After that,
even when everything was unpatched from it, I couldn't get any power to the
rest of the system. The other modules worked OK when I unplugged it from
the power module.

I haven't pulled it out to inspect it yet. Does anyone have any advice on
where to start looking? Of course, first of all, I'll make sure all the
parts are facing the right direction and look for burnt out ICs. :)

--PBr, hoping it's something simple and stupid, but thanking his lucky stars
that Paul S. will "repair" modules... ;)

Check your power cable and make sure it is properly put on the 900 power supply and the other end on the module itself. I had a smimlar problem before when DC was going from the miss-plugged module to the rest of the modules in the system. This was the single most scary moment (so Far...) in my MOTM history. Check it out

PS. Larry can be thanked for the design of the new pedal interface as well as for talking me into the module by listing its alternative uses in a recent mail. I'm sure Paul got a couple orders after that mail. Larry, thank you for your endless support of MOTM!

My guess too. There was a post a couple of months ago involving an 800 (?)
with a similar behavior -- a few of us suggested looking into these areas,
but I don't remember ever hearing back as to what the problem was (ever find
out?).

I think your talking about one of Jim's modules , and it did turn out to be
a reversed polarity. I had a similar problem a bad timer IC that was
pulling down the supply voltages across the modules powered by the same PS.

Check your connections for polarity. If you have a DVM, check the voltages
with only the suspect module in attached. If you have a DVM, call Paul,
and he can walk you through diagnosing the faulty component.

Reversing the polarity was Dr Who's cure all,
sure got him out of a scrape or too.
Have you got a sonic screwdriver?

Well, remember, my original design was a plain-jane approach. It was Paul
that added all the goodies to bring it up to MOTM standards. Gate, S-trig
converter, LED. :)

thank you for your endless support of MOTM!

Oh, it's all fun and I like to contribute what my limited abilities allow.
The great part is that being involved with MOTM has been such a learning
experience. It has been a catalyst for me to start digging into
electronics. It has been 25 years since I graduated from 'lectronics
school. In my line of work (high voltage) we don't get to play with the fun
stuff (unless you are one of those guys that takes pleasure in smoke
letting. :)
