FIlter Harmonics (cont.)

FIlter Harmonics (cont.)

Alright, from the Mate_Stubb and Paul I've managed to get a pretty
good understanding of where I'm going. Mate was on the money with
pointing out how important the frequency of the original wave was.
(side note... CURSE MY "Digitally Controlled Analog" SYNTH with
its "zipper" effect when i sweep the filter!) I've uploaded some MP3
files (I know, I know, esp. at 128kbps the sounds get massacred) that
are the effect I'm looking for. Also, there's something interesting
going on in thses files, perhaps there's a noise source as well, or a
second filter, maybe bandpass? Any suggestions as to how this sound
was generated would be helpfull. This is one of the files that had
sparked this interest in the harmonic tracking in the first place,
although I've heard better examples of it in other places.

There are two files, one's a short snippet that gets to the point of
the harmonic emphasis jumping around, and the other one is the full
sample.

[I *think* that this file came from a sample CD called "Trance
Formation" Since (if my memory serves me right) this is copyrighted
material, I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't abuse the copyright.
I'll take the files offline within 2 days or so.]

You can really hear the effect within the first few seconds of the
file. Sorry for the obvious processing on the file, but it came that
way. <grin>

I'm done apologizing for posting. If you've got a problem with me
posting too much, just let me know, k?

Another thing to try for this effect is to use a vco (tuned fairly high -- like mid kHz) to drive a vc divider. Use the output of the divider as your audio, and sweep the divider from one to 16 (or 32) to sweep through increasingly lower harmonics -- an lfo or eg is good for this.

What's that? You don't have a vc divider?

When I do this, I often use two vcos (one to FM the other) to get a very rich harmonic background to sweep across. If you use the vcfs to pick off harmonics, remember to use a harmonically rich waveform (like a saw or square -- or some rich FM) so you have something to hear when the filter peak passes a harmonic.

Good luck!
JB

Having never heard of a variable voltage divider... I propose a new
500 series module....

The uVD! Doepfer had one, here's some info on it....

I'd have to hear it, though. ::grins::

Can we use uPenicillin to get rid of it? <grin>

Just heard your MP3 examples... On top of my suggestion to use a S&H, add a
little slew! Otherwise you're going to get very obvious stepping.

Doepfer? Pfui!
