Polyphonic modular question

Polyphonic modular question

2002-02-15 by dgsaa@winfirst.com

Hi everyone,

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding what it would take to create a
polyphonic modular. I assume it would require some sort of "note assigning"
circuit (perhaps built into a MIDI/CV converter) which would send the
individual notes to their respective VCO's, right?

What would the overall setup look like, in terms of modules, converters,
etc? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
David

It takes 2 elements:

a) A MIDI-to-CV converter that can either handle 2 MIDI channels (ie a keyboard split) like the
Pro-2000. Or, a MIDI-to-CV converter that that assign multiple notes from 1 incoming MIDI channel
(Encore Expressionist).

b) multiple 'sets' of modules. A 'voice' may be 2 VCOs, a VCF, 2 EGs and a VCA. For a 4-voice
system, you would have 4 duplicate sets of these.

At NAMM, we had Robert Rich's 38-module system running 7 independent voices all at once.
