How about panels silkscreened with "This Space Intentionally Left Blank".

Some of us simply use thin white tape to separate modules. If it still looks
like a confusing sea of knobs after that you might want to do something I
tried as a test awhile back. Use Letraset Letrafilm Color/Tint Overlay to
color code different knob functions. Just stick a piece of it ontop of a
knob, use a sharp exacto knife and cut around the aluminum/chrome knob top,
remove scrap Letrafilm, and bingo, you can now have knobs with metalic blue,
metalic red, or other color tops. It will add a lot of pretty color to an
otherwise monotone synth.

I think module real estate is precious to most of us. Taking up space with blank panels means less space for useful synthesis in favor of better understanding a layout you yourself created in the first place (in other words, if you set up your modular, then the sea of knobs shouldn't really be an issue)... (this coming from someone who's trying to figure out where to put the next batch as my cases are full :-)
