midi LFO module

2003-02-02 by John <jpyyz@yahoo.com>

Hey guys. I'm mostly a lurker and have just sent off a check for my
first sytem to Paul (woohoo!!!). Anyway I know you all love to
brainstorm so here is an idea I was kicking around earlier...

I was playing with my evolver earlier tonight (very cool mono synth
from Dave Smith). It has 4 LFO's which can be sync'd up to the
sequencer, and the seq can be sync'd to MIDI clock. Which ends up
giving you 4 midi controled LFO's. My music sometimes contains a
lot of Polyrhythmic blips, sweeps etc (3's over 4's, 9's over 5's
you get the idea). The cool thing with the evovler is you can setup
one LFO to vary Resonance, one to sweep the filter, one for tremelo,
the last for osc sync sweeps. Give them their own subdivision of
the main tempo and they all groove together.

I think I read somewhere that Paul was going to make available an
Update to the MIDI-CV converter (or maybe it was the Seq) that would
allow MIDI clocked LFO's. If this doesn't come to pass what about
another 600 series module that would do just that. 4 or 6 LFO's
with a switch for each to control shape and another switch or knob
to adjust the division of the incoming midi signal: whole note, 1/2,
1/4, 1/4T (quarter note triplet) etc.

This seems like a neat module to me. Whaddaya ya'll think?

The 4 MIDI-syncd'd LFOs will be an *optional, additional charge* upgrade. But not much (under
$50), and more features as well. This is keep the introductory price <$500.

Sounds cool. Paul's midi/cv will have software syncable lfos, but you
can also play around with hardware ones. If you have some way of
getting hardware clock out of midi (for instance, the Expressionist
can output din sync pulses), then you can use these to sync an MOTM-
320 lfo.

Very cool. Thanks for the info Paul.

Hmmm this is something I might want to look into. Sounds fun for
sure.

There are numerous gizmos that can extract a hardware clock from MIDI.

While the 320 does have a sync input which is very useful, it's not
the same as being able to sync the rate to an incoming clock -- the
sync input merely resets the waveform.

You can produce an LFO synced to a clock if you divide it down and
then shape it with a lag processor. This works if the divider
produces a square wave or preserves the duty cycle of its input.
However you have to re-adjust the lag processor if the speed of the
clock changes.

Other than that, it's impossible to sync an LFO to a clock using
analogue. I saw a mock-up of the VC pulse divider that had a "ramp"
output, and I suggested to Encore that they include a clock input for
the digital oscillators in the frequency shifter.

The ability to produce LFO's synced to MIDI clock is a very nice
feature for a MIDI-->CV converter, but I would like to see a module
that can produce dedicated waveforms synchronized to a hardware clock.
