status of cables

status of cables

2003-02-02 by J. Larry Hendry

Thanks for all those that responded about cables. If you were thinking
about responding and did not, please take time to do so. I say this because
the quantity indicated by those that did respond is probably not sufficient
to justify me making a large group buy for cables.

I am still getting price quotes based on lower quantity. But, it appears
that the savings may be so small that if I put any reasonable mark up on the
cables they would be about the same price you could probably get them
elsewhere yourself in smaller quantities.

And, it seems that 15 people have 15 different ideas about how cables ought
to be. Some like cloth; some don't. Some want massive tech specs, some
want better price. No one agrees on heat shrink color strategy. (I can
probably deal with that one effectively).

Basically, I am now looking at a Rapco manufacturing a Belden cable with
either a Switchcraft 280 jack of one that Neutrek makes that is identical in
size (not the tapered one). I am leaning away from cloth cable because the
specs for that cable are not near as good (although at 10V signal levels, I
think it is all good enough). I want to personalize the heatshrink with
something like "synthesis technology" or "MOTM" with Paul's permission or
"Stooge cables" or "wise guy synth" or "??" Of course, opinions are welcome
from anyone expressing an interest in buying cables.

So, I will keep gathering cable specs and prices / options and report back
in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, if you are interested in cables and
have not written me, this would be the time to do so. The future of this
endeavor is completely in your hands.

Frequency Shifter

2003-02-03 by Tentochi

It looks like Tony may have a new graphic up for the
Frequency Shifter (I can't remember for sure).

     http://www.encoreelectronics.com/cont_fs1.html

It looks like he is still going to be using tiny
knobs. I just wish he would put everything on the
"standard" MOTM grid (and extend the graphics
appropriately) so we could put our own full-size knobs
if we want to. If you feel the same way, please let
him know.

The LEDs looked like they are positioned strangely
too. Hmmm. There is definitely NOT an issue of panel
space of this module.

Cheers!

Weller WTCPT Problem!

2003-02-03 by Tentochi

I started having problems with my Weller WTCPT about 6
weeks ago. I will be soldering along and then all of
the sudden the tip will go cold. The power light is
still on the base. I have torn apart the unit and
tested everything as per the included instructions;
everything tests out fine. I have also tried swapping
tips with the same results.

A minute or two later, the tip will heat back up.
This off and on cyle continues every few minutes.
This is obviously incredibly frustrating.

The unit was working great up until this time.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Does anyone have any suggestions? Have heard that it
might be the switch or heater (in the handle).

Does anyone have contact info for the manufacturer?

THANKS!
Shemp

I used to work in a room full of them. I haven't read the instructions (HA)
but the most common causes of problems like this are...

* Loose/broken connector. Check the plug on the cable and the socket on the
base. Sounds like you've already done that.

* Loose connection inside handle. Did you take that apart as well?

* Bad thermostat assembly--typically requires replacement (do they still
make them?)

* Intermittent transformer. I seem to recall the older ones have some sort
of fuse in them (in the transformer itself) but I don't remember clearly
now.

It sounds thermal. Does it do it just sitting there with nothing being moved?

Not right at hand. Anybody?

Definitely worth fixing. Especially the old ones with the better
transformers. Mine's going on 20 now...

Howdee Ho! (for all you southpark fans)

That's the newer old one. It's not the proto that Robert showed again
at NAMM this year, but it does represent the "current" proto sitting on
my bench right now. It will change again. There will be more tweaks to
everything, so don't get all bent just yet :)
