wires, wires, wires....hhhmmm

wires, wires, wires....hhhmmm

1999-10-13 by aaron@xxxxxxxx.xxx

Ok,

Being new, and having NOT gone thru ALL the archives, and alergic to cats....

What are the opinions on patch cables? Good lengths? Good brands - audio - CV?
Switchcraft connectors...Neutrik...Rat Shack? Colors? Does purple Apogee actually sound
better than grey Belden? Will my power be better if I use that cool cable from
my G3? Will using a black one on my G3 cause it to crash?

I know that Hosa cable sounds like crap. Heck just running audio thru one of their turn-arounds
is enough to make you go....HUH?!!! I made a bunch of patch cables for my System 100m out of
Mogami, it was left-over from a studio install. So it was overkill - it was free. Does free
sound better overall?

Am I making too much out of this? Have I nothing else better to do?

Someone please help.

Seriously tho....just looking for some opinions. Never having owned a modular of such substance,
you cannot scrimp on the little things.

The concensus is this guy called Wacky Kovaky (for real!) that makes
them up for $5ea using Switchcraft plugs. I personally like Mogami cable,

Aaron,
Few would argue that the Neutrik connectors are about as good as it gets
for a ~ $2 connector. However, one might argue that since we are all
connecting them to Switchcraft 112 jacks, a Switchcraft plug would be fine
too.

A while back we had a great thread on specific cable types, connectors,
and various cat allergy symptoms. I think I saved some of that and can dig
it up for you. However, I can also tell you the conclusion that I reached.
Someone else on this list (sorry, my age and declining brain cell count
does not permit me to recall who), found a site called Wacky Kovacy cables
(www.wackykovacy.com). This guy makes cables to your specification. He
uses USA-1 cable and Switchcraft ends. The ends are all soldered and the
heat shrinked under the plug cover. You can choose you cable color and
color of heat shrink.

I bought 30 cables (various lengths feet and under) for $150 plus $15
shipping. The arrived in about 4 days. For me, there is no way I would
spend all that time with a soldering iron making cables that would cost me
at least $4 each when this guy will make them for $5 each. Are these
cables as good as Mogami cable / Neutrik connectors? Well, probably not.
But they are close enough that a Stooge like me can't tell the difference.

http://www.wackykovacy.com/ is the address. He's good. And he will
custom-make them using your choice of color for the cable and color for the
heatshrink, so you can color code them by size, use, whatever. And he's so
inexpensive!

Wasn't me, I'm one of those idiots who makes his own cables. Today
I'm terminating 192 BNC connectors to 735A bundled coax. At least
I'm getting paid. A lot.

Since Paul's been harassing me to change over from Banana jacks to 1/4" I've
been checking this stuff out.

Talk about Wacky! I thought I remembered you quoting this price ($5.00 each)
but when I looked at his site a couple of weeks ago, I thought he had posted
$8.00 for 1' cords. I also noticed that he specified lengths of 1', 3' and 5'
and longer, whereas I would want cords of a few different lengths between 1'
and 3' -- am I wrong? Did his prices go up? I noticed he offered packages of
cables, and it might be useful if he offered a MOTM package of say 8 to 10
cables between 1' and 3' -- any thoughts here?

And surely an improvement over many cables I currently use!

The price is $5 ea up to 36". When I first called him I let him know that
there was a great potential for business among the MOTM/DIY crowd and
mentioned that the average person would order at least 15- 20 cables. The
DIY'ers were a demographic he hadn't considered, as he thought that modulars
were dead. The quality is excellent. He even custom heat shrunk/ color
coded my cables at no extra charge. I'm up to 45 at this point with no two
cables the same color - makes for easy tracing.
With a complex patch the system tends toward a colorful African motif...
