Zimmer's Modular

Zimmer's Modular

2005-02-04 by Jeff Laity

Note: DO NOT CROSS-POST this message. See below.

I probably shouldn't be doing this, but I just uploaded a few pictures
sent to me by a friend. They show Hans Zimmer's enormous modular synth,
located in his impressive composing studio in Santa Monica. This studio
has a working fireplace, wet bar, several side studios for recording
performers, and a great writing desk for Hans. I've visited many of the
top studios in the world, and this was by far the most impressive I've
seen. I could die in that room.

But I thought you might be interested in the modular synth that takes
up the rear wall of the studio. Pictures don't really give you the
scale of this system. It's about 40-60 feet wide.

http://www.jefflaity.com/misc_pix/mvp/Untitled-9.jpg
http://www.jefflaity.com/misc_pix/mvp/Untitled-6.jpg

There's a semi-circular bay filled mostly with Moog modules, although
there were probably PPG and Polyfusion modules in there too. You can
see this in pic 1:

http://www.jefflaity.com/misc_pix/mvp/Untitled-1.jpg

There are some other high-res pics of his Moog on the synthfool.com
site.

As you go to the right, the center rack was mostly Doepfer when I
visited. It looks like he added some SE gear, perhaps they have MOTM
filters in them? (Hah, I'm on-topic.)

http://www.jefflaity.com/misc_pix/mvp/Untitled-3.jpg
http://www.jefflaity.com/misc_pix/mvp/Untitled-4.jpg

The bay to the opposite end of the Moog is filled mostly with Roland
modules:

http://www.jefflaity.com/misc_pix/mvp/Untitled-5.jpg

PLEASE don't cross-post this to other sites or lists. I wanted to share
this with my MOTM buds, then I'll delete them in about a week. If I see
this on AH, Gas Station or elsewhere, I'll pull the pics immediately.
I'd also appreciate if you don't put these on your own website. I've
twice had someone threaten legal action based on something I put on a
website, so I appreciate your understanding on this matter.

One of these days, when I get to visit again, I'll bring my camera and
take some super-high res pictures of my own. I want to be able to read
the writing on each module. :) Then I'll have full ownership of the
photos and I won't have to be so paranoid.

Enjoy, -jl

Having virtually unlimited disposable income can be a wonderful thing....

Well, this picture here is all "new stuff", including about $80,000 of new CMS
panels, a pair of MacBeths, a pair of Omega 8s, and Doepfer. Everything BUT
MOTM. Sniff. I guess I pissed him off on TGS or something.

Modular as giant bar wallpaper...hmm......

you know, even though this ONE photo represents all of my 2003 MOTM sales
(dollar-wise), I'd rather someone order 3 kits, enjoy building them and learn
something rather than use me as 'filler panels'.

That "only" looked like $30K of CMS to me, about $6K per rack panel.

In addition to MOTM, he is also missing out on Wiard, Blacet,
Synthesizers.com, Modcan and Serge.

He should buy a few more patch cords though. :-)

What?? No library ladder that rolls along the wall? And I notice that
nothing is patched! My MOTM always looks like a rat's nest! And no beer
holder?! WTF??!

Well, from what I've heard from someone who has spent a brief bit of time
with Herr Zimmer, he actually does use his mountain of gear, and has an
impressive working knowledge of every piece of it. If he doesn't use
something, he gets rid of it. In other words, you're not looking at
wallpaper or filler panels. Jeff can corroborate this or not, I'm sure; it's
just an anecdote I've heard from a good friend.

(Thanks for the pics, Jeff.)

Re: [motm] Zimmer's Modular

I have heard this myself. I heard a story that he asked an assistant to
patch together a sound for him, the guy couldn't do it after spending a
lot of time, and Hans finished the patch in a few seconds. He knows his
stuff. Of course, no one could possibly use 10% of that stuff on a
regular basis, but he does in fact use the system. And the next time I
meet him, I hope to gush all about my MOTM system and ask why he
doesn't have any modules. Maybe I'll pull a 440 out of my bag. "Oh
yeah? Well, you don't have one of THESE, do ya?"

I forgot that someone who works at MV reads this list. Oh well, so much
for my low profile. :)

Jeff,

Yo da man!

Now I have proof for my wife about how my "affliction" is really quite
mild and could be much, much worse.

While I love the fact that something like that exists, I could never deal
with having that many patch options. There's probably more possibilities
in that room than there are molecules in the universe!

Thanks,
Greg

Also mention you can get the '440 VCFs as an Omega 8 option, in case he's out of wall space :)
At the first NAMM I attended (2001) he spent about 20min in the booth being VERY nice and quite attentive. At that time, my selection was limited, but now that's not the case. Also, several people in the 'industry' were....errr...*quite vocal* (cough cough) on this bizarre anit-MOTM, anti-Paul thing that may have been a factor.
And if he mentions assembled lead times, tell him to call me and I'll take care of THAT issue as well.

Which is still a mystery to me! Why?

When I was looking around for a modular I also found the
anti-MOTM messages. I believe it was on AH, IIRC. I can
tell you, for a newby buyer, this is quite confusing. Good
thing I didn't believe them. :)

Re: [motm] Re: Zimmer's Modular

2005-02-06 by Overand

It seems to me that if zimmer were to place a single order for $25,000
of assembled MOTM modules, it would be a different story than the usual
'a few of this and one of that' orders that i'm sure make up *most* of
Paul's business. With a painfully large order, I imagine Paul could
farm off the assembly work for that group of modules, given the
quantity. In fact, it might even improve lead times for the rest of
us. And given the lead times that we've seen discussed on a few other
manufacturers, and the quality of the MOTM kitrs, modules, and
*service*, I think it's all fine as we are.

-Geoff, who only has a 10U rack filled with MOTM stuff (and a little
space taken my the UEG) because he's not a 40-50 year old semi-retired
wealthy individual, or someone who makes his living with his synth gear,
or isn't otherwise independantly wealthy, and so only has a very limited
amount of discresionary income. =]

Re: Zimmer's Modular

2005-02-06 by Steve

regarding zimmers ton of doepfer and lack of MOTM, it seems that he
doesnt really have any new modular except for the Dopefer (cwejman
doesnt count) I assume that he has this because 10 years ago or so
when Doepfer was the only guy making modulars again, Hans was
probably getting tired of his digi-boards and wanted to rekindle the
modular in his studio. Im sure that if MOTM was the first guy out he
would have a ton of it. . Mr Zimmer I'm sure has certain memories
of the Arp's of old and combined with the $$-lust factor and good
name of Mr P. Cirocco.. decided to drop $80 g's on CMS modular. oh
the life.

Imagine the synth gathering you could hold in that studio!??

Do you ever get tired of customers emailing and bitching about where their tempcos are?

Don't you ever get tired of customers e-mailing and calling about where
their modules are? Sigh.

I just thought I'd join the time-honored tradition of "these things
take time".

Eh? That was Geoff Downes! Zimmer wasn't part of the Buggles. It was John
Sinclair, Simon Darlow, Trevor Horn, and Geoff. Wasn't Sinclair & Darlow with a
Zimmer based band called "The Camera Club"?

modular.

see: http://www.filmtracks.com/composers/zimmer.shtml

google for plenty more.

He was also in the Camera Club with Downes and Horn i believe.

This quote is false:

"and teamed up with Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes as "The Buggles" to produce the
worldwide hit, Video Killed the Radio Star..."

Also here - relevant quote:

http://www.80smusiclyrics.com/artists/buggles.htm

"When Horn and Downes found themselves the only two remaining members of the
group, they dubbed themselves the Buggles, and scored an international hit with
"Video Killed the Radio Star.""

Zimmer may have been a producer, but he's neither a producer of The Buggles nor
in the writing credits for any of the songs. And more here:

http://www.murashev.com/dmdl/artist.php?id=27

"The members: Geoffrey Downes, Trevor Horn, John Sinclair, Simon Darlow."

Even more quotes (about Video Killed The Radio Star):

"Well, we got a lucky break with the song, which had been turned down by every
record company, until my then-girlfriend played it to someone at Island Records,
and they signed me & Trevor there and then."

No mention of Zimmer.

http://www.asiaworld.org/history/general.php?cat=interview&cat_id=1

I have "The Age Of Plastic" and Zimmer's name isn't mentioned anywhere. All
songs are written by Horn/Downes (and Wooley in some cases), and it was produce
by 'The Buggles'. Googling only lists a loose affiliation, but he definitely
wasn't part of the band.

The Buggles were Downes and Trevor Horn at the helm, but Hans Zimmer and
Thomas Dolby were brought in as musicians. Also Warren Cann (from Ultravox),
and a few other people whose names escape me. It's been a while since I've
seen the video, but I remember a few shots of Zimmer in the video with a
fantastic keyboard rig, I think with an ARP (2600?) in his keyboard stand,
and a column of (to my memory it was Moog) modules behind him. It almost
looked like a small version of TONTO and he looked BAD*SS!!
