Heat Guns

1999-11-12 by Elhardt@xxx.xxx

To anybody who knows and has bought a Fit Gun. Paul Schreiber recommended
the Fit Gun (heat gun) as a good one to get at a cost of about $33. Every
catalog search I do shows two models, the 1 and the 3. The lowest cost model
Fit Gun-3 costs between $50 to $65 depending on the supplier. Has a model
been discontinued, or are these new models, or did the price just shoot way
up?

I have a Fit Gun #3, bought it from FAI Electronics for $33 about 2 years
ago.

What about those small little butane torch things. One of the techs at
work uses one to shrink heat shrink on cabling jobs (but that is not near
the back of a partially plastic electronic component). Anyone use them of
have an opinion?

They're good for a couple of months, but I find that if you need to store
them then they'll tend to leak. If you're constantly out in the field and
making use of it then they're great.

Elhardt:

I prefer to use a heat gun with a concentrator nozzle for shrinking stuff.
The one I have is from my model airplane days, so in general it's a bit big
for simple shrink jobs.

You may wanna to check out that avenue... I don't think you'll find the
quality of the FIT, but it's an option. A local hobby shop should carry
them, or you can shop online at places like Tower Hobbies.

My experience with the cheapo butane torch was that I cooked the insulation
on a wire
because I got the flame a little too close to the wire. So I guess one
could say caution & a
steady hand would be recommended.

RE: Heat Guns

I bought one of those cheap-o ones from Radio Shack (you pop a modified
butane lighter in it) and it's shrunk my tubing just fine. Less than $10.

Good for spot cooking too.

David.

Re: Heat Guns

1999-11-13 by Elhardt@xxx.xxx

Thanks everyone for your suggestions on heat guns. I just checked FAI
Electronics and their price is now at $50 for the Fit Gun. 50% inflation
rate for two years seems rediculous. Considering I only need to shrink a few
pieces I will probably just buy a cheap one locally, or use the thick metal
part of my solder iron which has always worked well for me in the past.

Hi All !

Seems like we're going for the longest thread here, so i'll add my
bit :)

Many years ago i bought a "Portasol Model P-1K Cordless-Refillable
Butane Gas-Power'd Soldering Tool Kit" (sic) . This contains,
besides a torch "plug-in", catalytic hot-knife, soldering bit, a
catalytic driven hot air thing . Works well on small schrinks, never
tried on big ones . The hot air will melt solder, and boil pvc
insulation, but it will not burn or scorch it like a torch, even
those small ones, when they work . Bought two, VERY unreliable, not
worth the money . The only pocket type torch with piezo which i know
that works well, is the "Pocket Burner 2 by Prince" . Sadly
unavailable in Europe (tell me otherwise), i got one in Tokyo in '93,
busted it by filling with a bad gas refill, grrrr ...

Bye for now .

Keep 'em oscillating :)

hello,
so if we're up for another MOTM record-breaker here's my addition:
i got a 1400W Black & Decker heat gun for \ufffd20 i can use it on either small
pieces of heatshrink or big looms thanks to its intuitive proximity control
(tm)
had to come up with some smart comment
by the way - wish me luck - i'm just about to start my first #300
cheers
