freebies & electro caps

freebies & electro caps

2005-06-30 by Paul Schreiber

a) I'm going to tally up what free modules are currently on order this weekend
(if you don't know what I'm referring to, see the PDF catalog). Chances are, I
will have to order front panels, pc boards and some parts to cover them all. I
will start shipping what I can next week. However, be aware that:

1) modules which are bought will have priority
2) it may be 6 weeks until certain models can be shipped ('310s, for example)
3) no whining rule enforced
4) I'm only going to ship ONE MORE TIME, and the deadline to 'cash in' is Nov.
15th. "Paid for" modules bough after that don't count
5) All modules count except blank panels and connector boards. Yes, the mults
count.

b) You may notice that newer delivered kits will have different color
electrolytic caps. I'm changing vendors and beginning to buy RoHS compliant
(lead-free) parts. Per previous discussions, I have to be RoHS compliant by July
1 2006. So, as stock of leaded parts are depleted, I'm switching over. Don't
freak out if the caps go from orange to blue: they are the same spec (if not
better).

Paul,

Can you mix legacy and RoHS parts on the same PCB? And is there anything we
as kit builders will have to do differently to use them? I've heard that
different solder and different PCB traces are required. I've also heard the
RoHS parts have a much shorter shelf life. Is this true?
