New VCA teaser

New VCA teaser

2006-02-15 by Paul Schreiber

I am debugging the Frac VCA (MOTM-1190) which is the 'core' for the MOTM-130
Pan/Fade VCA.

Happy to report this is a cool module:

a) the input has an "overdrive" so that at full level, a "warping" THD will be
present (triangles getting 'sin-ed')
b) the output side has a 2-transistor 'gentle clipper' for rounding of signals
above +-6V pk-pk

The design uses no OTAs (like the '110 and the '190). I will run plots of
frequency response and THD later this week.

The Frac version does *not* pan/fade but the MOTM version will.

Hats off to JH for another winner.

Paul, I'd LOVE to hear an mp3 of both features! :)
Any due date known for the '130? ;)

It's somewhat of a pain for me to make MP3s (time consuming). I will
take some scope photos and FFTs plots :)

None whatsoever. How about "this fall".

no shortage of modules, just *time*

Heh. ;) If I stuff those in my ears, will I hear it then?

It's the Frac stuff Paul, dump it! ;P

Cloud Generator was [motm] New VCA teaser

2006-02-16 by thomas white

I am waiting very patiently for this module to come as well. Although I know my one order will not get it created much sooner, I still like to think it helps cement that it will get done *someday*. I have never heard one single module make sounds like the sample I heard in 2003 at the NAMM show out of one module. Hot hot hot! Lot's of good stuff coming out soon with the 650 and the 730 (and of course the Frac modules) but I can safely say I am hoping for a "cloudy" day before the end of the year. Paul, is there a storm coming by say... the Holidays? Best estimate anyway,
Thomas

Even though I haven't heard it (are there any samples floating about?)
I have longed for this one since it was originally mentioned...

I also patiently await this one. Isn't it supposed to be similar to The

The way I understand it, it is a VCO with eight simultaneous waveforms
that can be detuned under voltage control by various amounts. Big
huge fat...

if the 130 isn't going to ship, is there any chance of a schematic?

my mistake - i misread that post the first time round. it actually
says "not dead, but not too soon either".

there's a lack of VC panners around - the modcan one is expensive and
the serge one only arrives as part of a panel. my plan if the 130
isn't going to happen any time soon is to hack the Wilson autopanner.
but i'd like to see the MOTM one, and ideally build it...

does everyone just use 2 VCAs then?

I use Blacet's Micro LFO in conjunction with his Dual Linear VCA. The
LFO has outs for SIN and inverted SIN, so no third module
needed...works good!

Yes, two VCA's with the appropriate gain and control voltage offsets
so that an EG or bipolar LFO will cause a panning effect. I built a
bunch of VCAs using some SSM chips I had laying around, they work
nicely as VC panners:

Re: [motm] New VCA teaser

DIY'ers check out Electronotes #108 for a panner-fader circuit (two
inputs, two outputs, 1 CV) that uses only one VCA to do simultaneous
cross fading and panning. I've been considering doing a version of it
with one of my MOTM protoboards (now unobtainium). In the mean time I
use a couple of modular VCA's.
