[motm] MOTM-490 and Moog filters

[motm] MOTM-490 and Moog filters

2006-03-09 by Scott K Warren

How close is the sound of the MOTM-490 uVCF to the vintage filters in
the Moog modular and the Minimoog? I don't have any Moog filters and
I'm sure my ear isn't good enough to hear the difference anyway
(software guy, not musician), but I'm curious what people think.

This is not to start an AH-style "which filter is better" thread. I
just happened to acquire a couple of Minimoog oscillator boards for my
MOTM modular to assimilate, and I am wondering how close I'll be to the
fabled Minimoog sound if I run them through MOTM-490's and use other
MOTM modules for the remaining voice functions. Paul S's blurb says the
490 captures all the subtle characteristics of the original, and as far
as I know Paul is always right!

Inquiring minds want to know,

I should have one shortly but I can't compare it to a 904a (the original) since
I don't have one.
I talked to Juergen H. about this. Jurgen was very carefully talking about this,
but eventually I got the impression that it's probably "d@amn close" (my
words).
And I trust his works! ;-)

The 490 is really built to resemble the Moog modular. There *is* a
'moog sound' that is *somewhat* common to the modular and the mini, but
they really do have quite distinct sounds. You'll get a 'very close'
re: the modular and a 'hm... related' re: the mini.

Thanks for the clarification -- that helps a lot.

So I guess I'm in the market for a couple of Minimoog filter boards now!

(Not that I don't love the 490! And the MOTM-300... and... etc)
