Who's using 19"-Rack for the Modules?

Who's using 19"-Rack for the Modules?

2006-05-22 by Michael Zacherl (aka TonTaub)

Hi All,
forgive me if this has been discussed many times:
Since I simply don't find the time to design and eventually build a
decent wooden cabinet for my MOTM-style modules I'm pondering why not
someone let build two 19" cases like the many you find on the road
(redish/brownish plywood with aluminum frame, butterfly locks, a pair of
handels, etc.).
I'm thinking of something rather slim yet simple for three rows of
modules each plus 3U for additional stuff like FX or multiples (i.e. 18U
of height).

Who's using that in a similar way and what are the pros and cons?
What's the inner depth (clearance) your cabinets have?

Anything else I have to think of?

Thanks a lot, :-) Michael.

They make these in 12" depth:

http://www.nice-racks.com/

And they're sturdy too. Holds my 400lb ass when using it as an
improvised seat just fine. ;-P

I built a wood case and used normal rack rails in it. I just had to get some rack screws. they're
a little bigger but it works great!

www.nice-racks.com is a great option. He can build a custom rack for you. He built me a
custom double 19" rack. Each section 10U high, the rack itself 9" deep (which is more than
enough for Motm stuff and for some 19" effect processor rack gear).
That's 40U of modules, more than you need maybe. But it's compact and relatively cheap
compared to other options you have. (cost me $260 shipping included), and has a great
wood finish. It is pretty heavy though so it's not for gigging or moving around.
Mine has rack rails on both front and rear. That way I can easily close the back with blank
19" panels.

I can send you a picture if you like.

Ithai.

i also went the nice-rack route. i'm very happy with them. i got 2 standard racks, 10 spaces, 12" deep. i also ended up getting a couple of the slanted racks for regular equipment. i've been really happy with them.

They look nice, although weight (that of the cases, not mine ;-) might
be an issue.
I need something for the road. Anybody uses something like that for
going on tour?

         Thanks, :-) Michael.

Seeing a picture would be very nice, although weight is an big issue.
Are the two halfs seperated?

  Thanks, Michael.

Hi Chris,

looks very nice!
Are you running them with a single power supply?
If so, how did you do the interconnection?

  ;-) Michael.

thing is, I tried to go the DIY route for the cases. I'm not very
satiesfied since the boxes got way too heavy.

  Thanks, Michael.

I take my MOTM to gigs so I use 2 SKB 12U and 2 SKB 10U. Ferociously
expensive. Very transportable. Wobble a bit when cabling.
Individual power supplies since I can take various boxes that are
configured for different things. Hence, a modular modular synthesizer.

PLL, BFG

I looked at the SKB line (since it's internationaly available) as well
but couldn't find boxes which are not such deep.
What models did you go for?

 Thanks, Michael. (Vienna, Austria)

i have a 900 and a 910 mounted on the left cab and a 960 power supply extender going to the right cab with a long power cord between them. i installed a separate 5 space rack in the back of one cab (the left one) to hold the power supplies. i got the 910 with the idea that i'd eventually be getting modules that require that power supply.
