AudioEngine ideas plus other ramblings

AudioEngine ideas plus other ramblings

2006-07-06 by John

As an assembled only customer I'm actually happy that Paul is moving
in this direction. I'm one of the guys that have been waiting a
*long* time for my assembled order to be finished. I obviously
haven't placed another order (and won't) until my original order is
finished. With all that said, if Pauls plan works out and he can
get assembled orders out the door in weeks instead of years (my
case) the quality of product is enough to forgive and get the credit
card back out. I would love to have a pair of the 485's :)

As for the AudioEngine. I think its a grand idea. There has been
talk of a "miniwave" type module. In addition to the Blacet style
of wavetables I would like to see something in the PPG/Waldorf wave
style as well.

Also I use Sample and Bit Reduction all the time in my DAW but
would !!!LOVE!!! to have a module with Voltage Controlled parameters
of the Sample rate and Bit Depth. Since this is a digital process
it seems like an easy thing for an AudioEngine based module.

John

Module recomendations for a basic MOTM synth set up?

2006-07-07 by Erik Olson

Hi everyone,

I believe this was discussed not long ago but I was wondering what everyone
would recommend as far as the modules needed for a basic MOTM based modular
synth set up is concerned. I currently own a '420, a '485 and a '380. Beyond
adding a VCO and VCA, what could I do with a limited number of modules that
would still give me some options for creating interesting sounds? If anyone
has any thoughts in that regard, that would be great. I'm also curious as to
what people would recommend for converting MIDI to CV?

Thanks in advance for the help,

Erik

a) you also need 2 MOTM-800s (EGs). One for filter modulation, 1 for the VCA. I
would get a '300 and a '310 VCO pair for PWM/FM effects. A MOTM-101 Noise/S&H is
good for random modulations.

b) MOTM-650 MIDI-CV is all you will ever need :) But if out of your $$$, it's
hard to beat a Kenton Pro Solo MKII.

2x300 VCOs, best damn 4 output oscillator, ever. More is better.
1x320 LFO, get the big one, the sync is where it's at.
2x800 ENV
1x440 VCF, I <3 Filters, the 440 is my fav.
1x910 Mult, you'll regret it without one
1x190 VCA
1x890 Mixer for output
1x910 Power supply
1x650 For all your CV conversion needs.

That's my recomendation. Of course, where I to do this all over again I
might go for a frac system, but it would have to include some non-MOTM
format modules to function.

It kind of depends on what kind of music you're making. I agree with the 800s and the 320, certainly. If you're interested in making very complex, evolving sounds (drone & ambient or glorp) VCAs, EGs, and LFOs are what you need. On glorpy stuff (ie, lots of cross-modulation) probably less in the EG/VCA zone.
If you're looking to make more traditional lead lines, then the 2x800 + 1x320 + 1x190 + 2x300 is a good formula. And you can't go wrong with a 440 on the bass lines.
But, in the end, aquire the VCA and VCO(s) and 2 EGs and then feel where you're needs lie.
As far as the MIDI to CV, well, I'd say that you'd do fine with a Kenton Pro-Solo for now. Grow your system and when you find yourself with 3 or 4 oscillators or find yourself craving an arpeggiator, look at the 650.
cheers,
