Finally decided to get a modular.

Finally decided to get a modular.

2006-08-31 by Ben Stuyts

Hi,

For years I've been looking at all the great synth DIY projects. Been
lurking on the sdiy list for many years. Even got the Electronotes.

When Paul Schreiber announced that he would stop selling kits, that
was the point that I started filling the shopping cart in sort of a
now-or-never effort. I finally ordered about 18 modules today. (The
MOTM-700 was already sold-out, pity.) It'll probably take me more
than a year to build everything, but I am sure looking forward to
it. :-)

I'm not sure about delivery times now. I read the messages here about
parts slowly arriving, so we'll see. Anyway, no rush.

Best regards,
Ben (Zandvoort, The Netherlands)

Yes, well, it's the 15% discount that did that. :-D

In my teens I did a lot of DIY, building lots of sound-related stuff
(amps, mixers, light-shows and so on). Almost built a Formant way
back then, and still have the books for it. But then studies came and
work (also electronics related) interfered, so it's been almost 20
years since I built something not work-related. Nowadays I mostly
work on software, and it feels right to start a major electronics
hobby project again.

Ben,

I've worked as software developer for twelve years now. I got into MOTM
synthesizers in 2002 because I needed to build stuff. Real stuff!
Given that in my youth I had worked as a factory electronics assembler
in avionics and later found work building audio and video synthesizers,
I had all the requisite skills. I still had my tools, too. I have
soldered every joint in my synth over the past four years without
needing to change the soldering iron tip on my GC Supertemp, an obsolete
temperature-controlled soldering station. It is over 25 years old and I
used it again today.

Happy building, and congrats on getting in on the last round of MOTM kits.

Thanks, well.... the dog won't like that! (I live about 300 m from
the beach.) Also, a walk on the beach is good to clear the head. When
there's no tourists, that is. :-)

Are there many MOTM owners here in the Netherlands?

Yeah, I feel the same. For example, I have a Yamaha An1x which does a
lot of the old-style sounds, but there's so much missing.

I need to get some new measuring equipment. My old analog multi-meter
is shot, my DMM is a toy (one of those chinese things for a few
euro), and my scope broke more than 10 years ago. Maybe I'll have a
look at a local dump-store (http://www.baco-army-goods.nl/ for the
dutchies). They sometimes have old Tek scopes in stock. On the other
hand, those new portable Tek scopes are really nice (and expensive).

Thanks :-)
