MOTM-650 and SCALA tuning scales

MOTM-650 and SCALA tuning scales

2006-10-18 by John Loffink

After trying unsuccessfully to load tuning scales into the MOTM-650, I got
some more information from Paul that scale programs 0 and 1 are write
protected.

I use SCALA for generating tunings. It is the defacto standard for Windows
based platform microtuning scale experimentation. There are also versions
for Linux and MAC OS-X. Link here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~huygensf/scala/

SCALA supports the MIDI Tuning Standard (MTS), as does the MOTM-650, to
transfer tuning scales across MIDI in a standardized manner. As I found
out, SCALA supports only the MTS tuning scale program number 0 by default.
I have corresponded with the author of SCALA and he will add MTS program
number support. He will also add support for program names, as right now
SCALA is always written by default in the MTS packet.

I'll provide an update when I get an ETA of the SCALA code release.

It appears the MOTM-650 MTS support was tested using MAC programs, probably
Max Magic Microtuner http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/16tone/ or Li'l
Miss Scale Oven http://www.nonoctave.com/tuning/LilMissScaleOven/ . So MAC
users should be able to write their own 650 microtuning scales with current
software.

Scala update 2.22Y now supports MTS program and names. I tested it and it
worked fine.

Critical SCALA parameters to set for dumps:
SET SYNTHESIZER 107 --> Sets MIDI dumps to type MIDI Tuning Standard bulk
tuning dump, 3 byte)
(or use menu item Edit/Preferences/MIDI/Synthesizer Tuning Options
(SEND)/Model: 107 MIDI Tuning Standard bulk tuning dump, 3 byte)
SET DEVICE ID 0 --> Sets MTS Device ID, default is 0, MOTM-650 ID is 0
(or use menu item Edit/Preferences/MIDI/Synthesizer Tuning Options
(SEND)/Device ID: 0)
SET PRESET 2 (or number 2-11) --> Sets MTS program number, same as program
location in MOTM-650
(or use menu item Edit/Preferences/MIDI/Synthesizer Tuning Options
(SEND)/MTS Preset: 2-11)
SET DESCRIPTION (name up to sixteen characters, only first eight used by
MOTM-650)
(or use menu item Edit/Edit Scale/Description/name)

Wow, John. This is GREAT! I will look forward to the update. I've
been getting curiouser and curisour about scales and analog synthesis...
