substitute non-polar caps

substitute non-polar caps

2007-03-31 by ilanode

Hello list, I'm reading here for a while but this is my first post.

I'm the happy owner of bare MOTM pcb.s (190 and 485). However shopping
for appropriate sized non-polar caps seems to be impossible overhere
in Germany. Even though I'd like to stick slavishly to the BOM I'm
tempted to substitute them for WIMA MKS. Do you think it a good idea?
Alternatives? Any help is highly appreciated! Regards, Ingo

I don't think WIMA MKS come as big as 33uf, 16V (C6 in the 485).

You can substitute two polarized electrolytic caps for one non-polar.
Wire them in *series* with the '+' terminals tied together and using the
two '-' terminals in the circuit. In series the capacitance is halved
and the voltage doubled. So, two 68 uf 16V polars in series approximate
one 33 uf non-polar 32V. No problem that the voltage is doubled. The
main problem with this is just physical space. Be creative.
