All that in five years! I was amazed at what I was able to build in five years, but it's nothing comparable. But I was only working in my spare time! Richard Brewster http://www.pugix.com Paul Schreiber wrote:

I recognize the name from eBay. He was/is an active buyer of modular stuff. I've lost several auctions to him... He's also a seller, too.

He just needs to take up electric guitar. There's a highway... Chub - just one more fuzz box! --- In motm@yahoogroups.com, "Greg James" <gjames@...> wrote: > > I recognize the name from eBay. He was/is an active buyer of modular stuff.

Paul Schreiber writes: >>Lot's of MOTM going on there :)<< And a lot of other stuff too. Too much stuff. And that looks like an incomplete collection, as I know he also has a Polyfusion that I didn't see in the video. Not sure what all of that's being used for, or if it's being used. -Elhardt

I must admit that, although finding large collections of vintage gear interesting to look at,?I wonder....what's the point? To impress those in our small community or?to actually?use in music composition/recording? If in composition/recording, what could possibly be gained by having almost every manufactured modular synth ever made in ones studio? One couldn't possibly master all that is required to utilize each synth to its maximum capability. I recall the recordings by Tomita and Wendy Carlos (Moog), Suzanne Chiani (Buchla), Michael Stearns (Serge) and others who spent days, months, even years?learning their instrument in order to get the most that each was capable of. Each instrument can produce very similar, if not exact, timbres and nuances if in the hands of the well educated musician. The afore mentioned artists atest to that. So, again, other then having a well stocked display of "eye candy", what is gained by such a display? A large MOTM system would do the trick,?or a large Serge, or Modcan system. But All of them? Of course, if one has an unlimited amount of disposable cash on hand, then why not, I guess. I get the impression that many choose to collect rather than seriously explore the possibilities?that?each and every instrument they own?can produce. Just an observation and not meant to offend anyone......if so, I apologize. SCR

Having enough synths (or modules) for the number of voices as you are going to use in an arrangement saves you from having to re-patch while composing or recording. It seems that Vangelis works largely that way. Some people like Tomita and Carlos can do complex arrangements bit by bit but that's not as easy and not as spontaneous. -- Andr\ufffd Majorel <URL:http://www.teaser.fr/~amajorel/> Do not use this account for regular correspondence. ac writes: >>It is. He's a fairly prolific TV & Film composer here in the UK.It definitely gets used.<< Again, I think ac meant this for the list. Yes, I'm aware he's a TV composer. But that doesn't say anything about whether massive piles of modular synths get used. On the AH list Drew Neumann gave a link to his site. He also has an insane amount of synths, and he's a TV composer too. But listening to his MP3's all I heard were pretty much nothing but samples. I can't imagine Beermaster is spending enormous amounts of time putting all that gear to use for TV productions. The two don't seem to go together. If he is, then he must be turning out massive Tomita-like projects, and I'd sure like to hear them. More people have larger synth setups now than ever before. There are more modular synth companies making modules now than ever. Yet, since this analog revival has come about over the past 10 to 15 years, there hasn't been a single CD released to date that justifies these huge gear collections. It's all untapped potential just going to waste. Andre Majorel writes: >>Having enough synths (or modules) for the number of voices as you are going to use in an arrangement saves you from having to re-patch while composing or recording...It seems that Vangelis works largely that way.<< Vangelis wasn't working with modular synths. He was almost more a keyboardist than a synthesist too and wasn't pushing any boundaries as far as synthesis. Most of how these people with massive collections are using their gear is just speculation mostly to justify their setups. Since we're not hearing any significant synth output from these setups, I think that right there gives us a clue as to their virtual non-use. -Elhardt
