Update/new logo poll

Update/new logo poll

2008-12-08 by Paul Schreiber

a) Early next year I am going to roll out the new website, and I've decided
to 'make over' the logo. Here is a link to some ideas:

http://www.gunnarlockwood.com/psmotm/logo/2/

you can click on each page to go to the next one (like a slide show). Each
page
has an ID code in the upper left corner. Let me know which (if any) you
prefer.

b) I will be able to ship more modules (both kit and assembled) out this
week,
but will have limited ship time most of next week. The last
ship day will be Dec 22. I'm going as fast as I can :)

c) MOTM-940 panels will arrive this Friday. I am ordering 380/890 panels
tomorrow
and will order '700 panels the following week. I have to spread these out
because
I am approaching $8,000 in parts orders the last 4 weeks and that is a lot
of
debt to take on right now. Things will improve when I get the '730s and the
assembled '510s shipping right after Christmas break.

OK -

Will isn't here right now so we won't have the benefit of his
confident 17-year-old insight <g>... But...

I don't like 1G (the Helvetica/Arial-like font) at all - it's too -
hmmmm - straight and predictable for this application. (And I like
helvetica for all kinds of stuff - it's easy to see - that and Times
New Roman - they're standards) But my vote is a strong nix on 1G for
the logo

Beyond that -

In the other 3 cases, I prefer the top example - the one with the text
two-lined and left-justified.
(I think the next down is too long. The top is stronger
because the eye doesn't have to move much to see the entire
    name.)
(The one where the logo is centered over the text is more -
    well - formal - and that's cool too if that's what you're
    after.)

So Saying -

I don't prefer 1F - the square-ish serifs are cool, but they don't
really add much IMHO

So now it comes down to subtleties

1D is cool because of the quirky font - a little sci-fi
1E is cool because of the clean-lined font and the very close
"drupschut" (or kerning)... it has a very concentrated look

So I think I like 1E best. It's got a concise look. It's easy to
see. I think it "says" technical but not so sci-fi.

OK - that's my vote

1E - the top version

Now - so far as font for the rest of the site... although there are
many more pretty fonts, Arial (Helvetica) and New Times Roman are, in
my experience the easiest to see (and therefore read). That's why,
when I was back at Bell Labs, we designed most text in those fonts...
but that doesn't mean it's what you'd want.

Good luck, Paul.

I thought this was a blind vote, but OK I'll play.

I liked 1E the best, then 1D then 1G. The only one I didn't like was
1F. I'm a little concerned about readability with 1D. But they all
look great!

I'm also bummed that Paul doesn't owe me anything right now! I've
grown to enjoy the anticipation.

I like most of them but, IMHO, even though it may be the most 'plain', I
think I like 1G the best because it's the easiest to read and looks
'strong'. (it also reminds me of a Synergy album for some reason! ;-)

The only one I don't care for is 1F because the font sort of turns me off.

I think when stacking the two words it would look nice to play with the
spacing a bit so both words are the same length. Here is an example I
quickly did to give you an idea (but I got the "Synthesis" a little wide)
http://www.imjohn.com/misc/SynthTech_1E_JLR1.jpg

I also played around with making the letters of the second half of each word
a little lighter since most people commonly refer to the company as Synth
Tech. That way the logo would better represent both names people know the
company by (the full name and the abbreviation) but my quick examples looked
crappy and I started thinking that doing a second color might be cost
prohibitive.

favor 1D or 1E
do NOT like 1F (too blocky) and to a lesser degree 1G (boring)

in both cases i like the last layout, with logo centered on top

1E for me !
to me, it looks more 'corporate', the perfect balance between the high level of technology / know how / and what it is in the end : an instrument to play.
I had a really big laugh (sorry for my french sounding english) when I saw the "-1fat.GIF" contribution and its overwrapped soundshape !

1D.

Perhaps consider the font "Meta":
	http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/fontfont/ff-meta/
You can enter some sample text to see how it looks.

Meta is a neat-looking alternative to Helvetica. It's used for signs
on the German train system or something. Very clean, but the
lowercase "g" has some character.

Hi John,

A great choice and in fact it a version is used for the BVG public transportation system here in Berlin.

For Paul's customers in the EU it might convey the "tram-stop emotion" rather than "synth I want to buy"... but I'd take it over all the other fonts chosen.

That said, I am glad John brought up the font issue. No offense to your designer but you might consider getting someone who is a typographer and/or has experience with logo creation and /or product design. It will be money well spent. If you can't then at least force your designer to look up "kerning" on Wikipedia.

No I am not a graphic designer or typographer. Yes, I have spent lots of money on their services and–with all things, the "fast, cheap, good––you get to have two of the former" holds true.

Please flame me offline if you must.

I like 1G, the top one. I agree, however, that you might want to have
a designer take a look at it. It's a good concept, but a good designer
can work on it for 15 minutes and make it great.

Just to let everyone know, a "good designer" *IS* doing all of this work. One that charges many 1000s of dollars.
