New PWR-20 cables have color swap

New PWR-20 cables have color swap

2009-07-03 by Paul Schreiber

I just opened 150 new PWR-20 power cables, and *every one* has the red and
white wires swapped.

And you wonder why I experience delays, headaches and general hair loss :(

And these same people have made this cable for ***12 FREAKING YEARS***, over
9,000 of them and now I'm out of power cables, except these "backwards
ones".

I will try to call them tomorrow, but 80% of businesses will be closed for
holiday weekend. So, it might be Monday until I can see about getting
correct cables made. It may be a week to 10 days, it's hard to say as (to
just complicate matters) the company was recently bought out so now I have
to deal with a new person.

Now, this happened like 6 years ago, I didn't catch it until a few people
blew modules up because the directions refer to the color code (even though
the connector is "semi-keyed" you can certainly flip it around and then blow
it up).

I'm at a total loss for words right now, I can't get over this, it couldn't
have happened at a worse time.

So: here is the plan

a) I *AM SHIPPING* assembled modules tomorrow to the 3 indicated people. I
will **attached the cable to the module** and send an email explaining the
color difference.

b) I *will not* ship kits or other modules with these because later on,
modules WILL get plugged in backwards and WILL get blown up.

c) I will ship kits that I have made up (with proper power cables) as much
as I can, and I will "kit up" parts for remaining kits all but the wire and
wait until the correct power cables arrive.

Hopefully I can get replacement cables by Thursday or Friday of next week so
that the shipping delay will be minimal.

I got some of those earlier cables. Wow, has it been 6 years!

I just put a "REV" label on the dustcap so I know which ones are backwards. They connector keying is quite good, so you really have to work on putting them in backwards. A sharpie writes real well on the connector dust cap. I also mark the cables I build this way. That way I know which is which.

Just a thought ...

I just put the connectors of a cable next to each other to see if the
colours are in the same order. I also do this with cables I got from
Paul.
Actually I don't mind what the colours are.
Admittedly if they were the same it would be harder to tell if the
cable is correct.
The only (and painful) mistake I ever did (so far) was to shift the
connector when putting it on, so that only three of four pins made
contact and of course a short circuit. But this was with a non-MOTM
module I "hurried into the synth" and not being careful enough. :-(
But I can understand Paul's pain!

   Michael.
