Paul, I tried to find "Secrets of Synthesis" to no avail. In my wanderings I found this site: http://www.wendycarlos.com//index.html On her page I found this info about the CD: The final Carlos contract album with CBS/Sony, released in late 1986, including on CD. Unavailable since the masters were reclaimed by Carlos in late 1996, although any remaining stock was permitted to be sold out. There is much info about all of her other albums both in and out of print. Very interesting. >From: "Paul Schreiber" <synth1@...> >Reply-To: motm@onelist.com >To: "MOTM listserv" <motm@onelist.com> >Subject: [motm] Are there any "new" sounds? Great comments Paul. I second the suggestion that if you are into Synthesis with a capital "S" (and if you're using a modular, I think you qualify!), you MUST have a copy of Carlos' "Secrets of Synthesis." Also, her new SOB boxed set is worth the price for the abandoned tracks and the booklets it comes with alone. In SOS, she follows the technology she used over the years, eventually all but abandoning her modular out of frustration. But you have to keep in mind the particulars of working in that medium at that time! It WAS pretty frustrating! You had an 8-channel recorder and VCOs that drifted between takes, primitive (by comparison) noise reduction, and so on. As you stated, manufacturers hit a fork in the road and started going for limited poly monsters and abandoned the modular idea, for us a really bad decision. With the advent of inexpensive, even "home" multitrack digital recording and the repeatability and editing capabilities of MIDI control, as well as quieter, more stable electronics, I think the modular is poised to come into its own again, at least for the people who are willing to learn how to use it. I'm continually amazed at people who look at a monophonic synthesizer and say, "What, you can only play one note at a time?" That's true of the vast majority of instruments in human history! Really, if you're doing big orchestral recordings, do you just want to hold down a triad on a sampling poly-synth, or do you want to articulate each individual note independently, like a real orchestra? Sure, the latter is more work, but the results pay off big time. For me, a big flexible modular and a hard-disk recorder with unlimited overdubbing capabilities wins out over a wavetable poly-synth and a four track every time. [Flame suit on:] Personally, as much as I love the sounds of analog and am very happy to get them back into my arsenal again via my modular, I'm not philosophically against modules with digital back-ends at all, if they add new capabilities. As long as they are patchable and can be voltage controlled. That's the side that I'm a purist about, not which chips are on the other side of the front panel. I think there's room for all kinds of stuff back there!

SoS may currently be out of print, then. I think Carlos intends to re-release as much of her stuff as possible (including the Tron and Shining soundtracks) via East Side, as soon as she can clear legal hurdles.

But I also agree that the programming interface is wretched. After playing with the FS1R a while you find yourself wishing desperately for the (I'm dreaming here) FS2R with 30 knobs, & a bigger LCD screen, easily programmed formant settings, & a manual that's actually useful. tomr

on the fss list some people have interfaced stuff like KAOS pad or other multi knob boxes to the FS1R. seems to work pretty good for them. I just play with the presets. There are so many I hae yet to hear them all. >From: hodad1@... >Reply-To: motm@onelist.com >To: <motm@onelist.com> >Subject: Re: [motm] Are there any "new" sounds? There will be "some" FS1R support in the Version 3 software in May. Wait until then!! <Paul S> ----- Original Message ----- From: <ivancu@...> To: <motm@onelist.com> Sent: Thursday, March 23, 2000 5:39 PM Subject: Re: [motm] Are there any "new" sounds? >From: Paul Schreiber <synth1@...> > > Now, don't get me wrong. I grew up on Mini solos >> Sure there were the Mini solos (pop as well as the Chick Coreas and Jan Hammers of the world), but a big influence on me was the Mini bass sound. Funkadelic, Gary Wright (his non-hit stuff), and others got great meaty bass sounds out of the MiniMoog ages ago (before everyone sampled these same sounds and used them again). Another interesting sound was Roger Troutman who was known for using his MiniMoog through a Heil talkbox. Everyone thought it was a vocoder, but it was much simpler than that. Ivan

I have soundiver and it does indeed have an FS1R editor. The software has some configuration problems in my setup but I understand version 3 will be better. The problems are with the way Yahama implements MIDI in the FS1R. It does work, but is very slow uploading/downloading sounds. >From: "Paul Schreiber" <synth1@...> >Reply-To: motm@onelist.com >To: <motm@onelist.com> >Subject: Re: [motm] Are there any "new" sounds?
