Rather than printing the pattern on paper and then taping this to the panel, I just cover the whole face of the panel with masking tape and draw my hole locations directly on the tape. This seems to work well for me.

Hello all. I just recently received a blank 2U panel from paul that I
wish to turn into a mutiple patch panel. Similar to the 940 but with all
1/4" jacks. I was wondering if anyone had done this and if there were a
drilling guide available. Also how are people drilling the holes in the
right places. I was thinking of printing the drilling pattern on a piece
of paper and then taping it to the panel, then drilling the holes. This
makes sense to me but does someone perhaps have a better way? Any help
would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Charles.

RE: [motm] Patch Panel

I have plans to drill a lot of panels for DIY stuff in the future. I'm going
to a machine shop, have them cut a metal template for a 2U wide panel, and
precision drill small pilot holes at every location an MOTM panel could have
holes. Then I can simply bolt the template to a blank using the 4 corner
holes, and get perfectly aligned pilot holes.

This is a really good idea! I might buy one of these templates from you (and
refrain from pointing out grammatical errors in e-mails) if possible.

John (I'm taking some days off work so I can finish my 440, drill the holes
in Paul Br's mult, send that and Larry's stuff out, and try to unbury the
crap all over my house) Barlow

Price both, but I'd strongly suggest steel. And don't forget the (extra)
corner mounting holes so you can get both 1U and 2U holes from the same
template.

Maybe, in that case, you may want to make the template 3U wide, for those
if us aspiring to build a 12Q fixed filter bank. -Nate

PS I would also buy one of these panels, no matter what size
