chuck,
and another pithy quote i recall in reference to "musical accessability" (
ie: making a living ) was: "you can be a virgin or a whore". still seems to
be true today long after the masters departure.
charles ives..... another visionary of orchestral type "modern" music........

I used that one in an old paper I did about defining a postmodern music. It
went something like, "while a poststructuralist literary theorist might
deconstruct a text, all a postmodern musician does is decompose." It also had
something like, "John Cage said 'if something bores you after ten minutes,
then do it for twenty' make a career out of it and you're Philip Glass."

Boy, two lists are really quiet now -- speaking of Cage.

john,
gee, having met cage and having the chance to talk with him for an hour or
so, i`m almost surprised he`d say something like that ( at least in print or
as an attributible quote ) as he seemed to be a very quiet, gentlemanly sort
of person. very strong opinions but very polite.

Sorry I wasn't more clear. Cage did say something like, (though I forget
where) "if something is boring after ten minutes, then repeat it for twenty
and you'll find something interesting. If you don't, then repeat it for forty
and eventually something interesting will come out."

John Barlow said, "make a career out of it, and your Philip Glass."

Gotta watch the use of that quote within a quote (double quote means
something someone said, single quote within a double means someone said that
someone said -- in the UK this is reversed).

I can attest to Cage's strong opinions as well, and actually Glass seemed
like a very amicable guy (and I have to admit I've got a few of his records
and have seen him live as well).
