pot question

2000-11-26 by Joseph Casbarian

Hi Group!

I've only just begun building and learning about synthesizers a
coulple of months ago, so please excuse my questions if they seem
silly. I finished building my first 320 LFO today. I noticed a nice
firm resistace as I turned these three pots (physically not
electronically). All my other MOTM's have a soft feel as you turn
thier knobs. The LFO's three 149 spectrol pots had much shorter leads
than in my other kits. I was just wondering why there is a
difference. I prefer the feel of these greatly, and wish my others
were like them.

Thanks,
Joseph from Suburban Chicagoland

"blame" Spectrol. They moved production from England to Mexico last year.
You
have the UK version, which was 'firmer'. Nothing I can do about it, except
not
worry about it and enjoy the sonic pleasures :) And the blue Bourns pots are
a different
feel as well. There's no way I can even win this battle :(

[ot] Went into local high-end audio store. If you are tired of the
Pioneer/Sony/etc crap
at Best Guy/Good Guys/etc then find a Mark Levinson dealer in your area. Go
look at
a Model 383 intergrated preamp/amp. Hold the "machined-from-a solid-block
of-stainless-steel"
remote. You don't even have to *listen* to it. Yep, there are still
engineers that can design
the good stuff. Look at a pair of B&W 804's. (OK, I'm British hi-fi biased.
I have a Rotel 971 CD).

My arms are sore hauling those 32kg 804 speakers up the stairs :)!! I'll
claim insanity when the VISA
bill arrives. If I sell about 400 more modules, I can get the 383 amp.
Errr...I mean...errr...
the wife need a wood floor in the bedrooms :0 Yeah, that's it......

Just for the record, anyone looking to buy Levinson stuff, don't let the
price tag scare you. I bought my 331 and 380 last year for about 2 times
the amount I wanted to spend on my entire system and I'll tell you, it
is hands down the best pair I have ever run. It's worth the extra money.
One thing to keep in mind (that I was completely oblivious to) speaker
cables make the difference. I never knew how much cables can alter your
sound. Check out Kimber Kable BiFocal XL. That's my $0.02... -Nate

oooh, and let me plug my favorite hi-fi gear from tiny Rogue Audio (almost
as tiny as MOTM : )) in PA/USA. They use tube designs, and I have been in
love since day one. Tubes with balls! www.rogueaudio.com
I second Nathans words on cables! The Harmonic Technology cables are
wonderfully musical. My system is about 75% HT now (audio, power, digital)
Sorry for the OT, couldnt resist
