420 status

1999-06-29 by Paul Schreiber

I have shipped out about 1/3 of them. Tomorrow is non-MOTM day. Thursday
another 1/3 will
ship, but the rest will have to wait until next Tuesday due to the 4th of
July holiday.

Initial reports are positive. Awaiting more. BTW I have *plenty* of parts
now so feel free to order more stuff!

All current orders for kits & assembled modules of all flavors should ship
no later than next Tuesday. Then it's
time to start on the '410.

The website home page will be back up Friday (it's a long story).

I wanted to finally get my "review" of the 420 in. I've been preoccupied with
other stuff, so it took me a few days to get it going, but I found it to be
the easiest kit to build yet. I just finished testing it about an hour ago,
so I'm still putting it through the paces. Mine needed no calibration at all.
The 1V/oct was very close over the four octave range of my keyboard, and the
RES pot went into feedback at exactly 8, so I left it that way.

I really like its nasty overdriven sound, and the input mixer will come in
very handy. I also really like the ability to have three CV sources mixed,
and especially enjoy that reversing attenuator. I find this control best
suited, for example, to times when during the initial stages of a LPF patch
with a positive going envelope and the attenuator near 1, a mere turn of the
knob towards -1 (and a minor adjustment of the FREQ pot) can take a rather
typical patch in a new direction that one might not have thought. Well worth
the minimal circuitry!

I still haven't checked out your patch Jim, but I will over the weekend --
thanks for posting it! And I still think the Patch Page is a good idea,
thanks for the offer Steve.

And I too am interested in your controller Doug. And I can't imagine Paul
minding you mentioning a joystick controller in the context of MOTM. After
all, with a two dimensional controller, you'll have to buy twice as many MOTM
kits as you otherwise would!

I'm still thinking about Dave's Moog Ribbon, I hope that repair job is coming
along better than we last heard.

But now I've got to try Thomas's idea of plugging a distorted guitar into the
420!
More later!
