  on the analog devices website..
found chip # AD9851.   outputs a digitized analog sinewave.  the cool thing 
is though that    "The device provides 5-bits of digitally-controlled phase 
modulation which enables phase shifting of its output in increments of 180°, 
90°, 45°, 22.5°, 11.25°, and any combination thereof. "   Phase control..   
now if the thing can generate LFO range waves.....   useful I woudl think as 
a basis for something right?  Shepard tones and im sure alot more.
output tuning resolution of 40 milli hertz   pretty good, no?

You caught my interest with this chip. It seems to be an actual hi-res
sampled sine wave that can be given frequency and phase digitally. However,
if I read it right, it has a minimum clocking frequency of 5 MEGAhertz,
below which it powers itself down.

Also, while this chip can output sine and square waveforms, a ramp (even
better, bi-directional ramps) are needed for a Shepard "barberpole" effect.

Could be cool though. I'll keep browsing the docs. Maybe a cool additive
synth oscillator could be made with this chip, since the app notes talk
about controlling the amplitude digitally as well.
