You're right Bruce, I can't think of any track, no matter how awful that doesn't sound a little better with a mellotron. The group doing the backing appear to be a german progressive rock band. Thinking of the british progressive rock bands I couldn't see King Crimson, Yes or even Barclay James Harvest doing this, maybe the Moody Blues?
