Re: [newmellotrongroup] Epitaph cover with surprise vocal

2015-12-23 by Andy Kinch

The problem with the vocal mp3 was that it wasn't totally isolated. There were other sonic "ghosts" that kept overshadowing it which had to be disguised somehow. Also, it had been recorded far too loudly. There were no dynamics left as everything was hard into the red, so therefore I had to engage in some extreme fader movements to try and get a little bit of light and shade back into proceedings. So if the instrumentation swamps the vocal on the choruses at all, it's all to try and disguise all of the above!
The other basic thing is of course, is that KC didn't record it with a click track as far as I know. The speed was all over the place, so some editing was required
to keep it in context with the already recorded arrangement.
Pleased with how it turned out tbh.
Been thinking about trying to contact RFs management to see whether they would give official permission to use it more widely, but I somehow think I would be wasting my time.

Powerful stuff. Listened to it about 4 times in a row in the car.

A little something I've been working on for a while.

Enjoy!

I'll leave it up for a while so people who want to can hear it, can. But for obvious reasons I'll be taking it down again shortly.
