The Mellotron Group

Woolly still uses an M400 and took it on the Maestoso "tour"  in I think 2002 ( First gig was the last gig ). I think he is still fan of mellotrons.

            I saw videos of 21'st century Schizoid band and also of Jon Wetton

performing Court of the Crimson King. I remember wondering why they

weren't using a real mellotron up there. I mean, these were guys who were

there from the beginnings- they could tour with a mellotron if they wanted

one. It is a kind of timely thing to think about after the Nick Awde book

coming out.

Most of these musicians he interviewed didn't really even like the tron.

They used it because it was the best thing they could get for making

string sounds but they didn't really appreciate the instrument itself.Most

of them were happy to get rid of it when sampling became available. Being

in King Crimson or Genesis or Barclay James Harvest did not guarantee a

love of the Mellotron.

  I traveled mine around since 1974. Before I had the servo card put in I

had some problems with pitch dropping but nothing i couldn't fix- after

that only minor adjustments. i can at least vouch for the reliability of

the M400. Now at the age of 52 and # 390 being 36 I am not so crazy

about lugging her around and letting her get beat up. I've recorded alot

of samples from my own tape sets and also from Mellotron Archives for

live playing. There is nothing specifically immoral about playing

mellotron samples. Still it is dissappointing not to have it on stage. I

saw Fiona Apple awhile back at the Beacon and it was sort of sad to hear

the nice chamberlin parts from Tidal played on a sampler.
