Another British film that used sci-fi to explore the collapse of civilization
(as might have happened in a nuclear war), was Day of the Triffids, a film that
is ripe for a remake.

But something that I hope is much better than the Tom Cruise War of the Worlds.

Hi-
"Warday" is a good read. More political and apocalyptical than sci-fi. 2
writers go cross-country in the aftermath of the event, gathering info and
stories from the survivors. California becomes its own country (almost). Kind
of like now, but more so.
Seek out a used copy.
