Synth Band Documentary

2011-07-31 by Bob Snyder

The next time you've got an hour and a half to kill you might like this. Or you might not. A BBC documentary on the British synth bands of the late 70s and early 80s - Kraftwerk, The Normal, Human League, OMD, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, etc.

There's even cameos by ELP, Roxy, and Wendy Carlos when she was Walter.

Fantastic thanks for posting, Walter was Wendy all along, wasn't she?

Thanks for sharing this. I watched it this morning. It was well done. Unfortunately I liked none of the music.

I can't say I'm a big fine either, but I like that the genre was new and different if nothing else. The later stuff like Depeche Mode and Yazoo were an improvement. And there were some interesting stories - that some of it had roots in prog rock for instance. I always liked OMD's Maid of Orleans for the Mellotron. I learned that they were going for a bagpipe sound. I was also a big fan of Wendy Carlos' Bach interpretations - very true to the original yet sounding like it never had before.

And I quite enjoyed going back on memory lane!
It would be a boring world if we all liked the exact same things.

I should say; I was glad there was a Carlos segment. Love Switched on Bach.
