Mellotron M400 Lighted Power Switch WANTED.

Mellotron M400 Lighted Power Switch WANTED.

2012-02-21 by mr.vincentgallo

In all my years years of owning Trons I have never had a faulty power switch or needed to source one. Recently I purchased another Tron which came with a broken power switch. Does anyone know where to source a exact replacement or know the part number and manufacturer of the original? Thanks

Hi Gino,

Probably because we aren't too popular either! Anyway, the VERY few switches we have are not for re- sale, only for personal use. There are no others available anywhere and we have truly searched high and low and then high again!

So why type a switch would be a good substitute that you can get at a DIY or Electronics store?

There are literally hundreds of choices. There is probably even a neon or led switch that could somewhat approximate the original with a bit of step down circuitry. I know there is a 1” lighted lever toggle that is a drop in replacement, almost, UK sourced electric stuff is very particular and even unique before the early 80’s. I’d keep a black washer handy.
I would probably have a go at rebuilding the switch for myself. if you have done any electronic DIY you can do it, pain in the butt work but if you want original. You could put an led or gow in the housing if you find repairing the switch too daunting.
I would suggest going to Mouser or Digikey rather than a local shop for Parts at least in the US. Farnell or Rapid in the UK.. NKK, Mountain or C&K are the brands of switch I prefer, expensive but very good.

When I think of UK and electric I always think of the time I spent pulling solid core Lucas wire out of a friends Jaguar and rewiring the car with lamp cord (speaker wire).

Aftermarket lighted switches are inexpensive and look far better than the
old Bulgin ones without a lens. If anyone needs help in locating one, let me
know. My M4000 looks swell with a nice green one.

"McGuiver" it until you locate a suitable replacement. That switch must have been used in other things.
I seriously doubt that it was manufactured just for the Mellotron. Martin would probably know. The original
manufacturer may be long out of business and if Martin can't find them I bet no one can.

The same switch also appears on some VOX solid-state PA amplifiers made in the late 60s/early 70s. If you're brave and handy they can be repaired, mine arc-d out so it was stripped and cleaned. The moving and stationary contacts were replaced with some similar ones modified to fit. It's been fine now for 10 years.

They were made by Bulgin along with mellotron plugs, sockets and control knobs. They ceased manufacture years ago. We still have the smaller round knob made in quantity from the original mould for the Vol, Tone and Pitch pot on the M4000 and as a spare for owners around the globe.

Having owned a MGA, XKE and a few other British "Lucas based" forms of transportation I agree....absolutely horrible
electrical system...yet another reason a British car will ~always~ let you down. But they are so damn much fun to drive!!

There you go, if you aren’t making a museum artifact there are lots of choices. I would guess that the originals will disintegrate under our fingers eventually just like my ARP, EML controls.

Oooh.. gotta love Lucas stuff. Especially those electro-mechanical regulator boxes. I once had a cat called Lucas MagDyno. Actually most old Lucas gear is great if looked after and my 1950 BSA has an unrebuilt 54-ish magneto that still works superbly.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Mellotron M400 Lighted Power Switch WANTED.

2012-02-21 by lsf5275@aol.com

It was a 1964 model as I recall. I didn't own that one; it belonged to a
friend. We complete rebuilt that car from the frame up as I did with the
XK-150, which I did own. I forgot that I (briefly) owned a Triumph TR-3 back
around 1971 or so, but it was stolen not long after I replaced the drop-down
top, reupholstered it and repainted it. Never got it back. A year later I
bought a '59 MGA and we put a narrowed Pontiac rear end in it and a 302
Chevrolet Z-28 motor. There wasn't much Lucas left when I was finished with
it. It was a bit too much motor for the car. Often, under vigorous
acceleration from a rolling or standing start, or when banging through the gears, the
doors would open from the excessive torque. Scary! So I welded the doors
closed and put a roll bar in it. That was an improvement, but the frame was
still not up to the task, so off came the body and out came the welding
torch. I tried everything I could think of to stiffen that frame, but I could
never completely solve the torque issue and handling could be a tad
unpredictable at times. The thing was a rocket and just plain scared the shit out
of everyone but me. It was a cool looking car with flared fenders and huge
tires (at the time) and I called it the "poor man's Cobra," which, except
for brute power, it was most certainly not. Finally, after a year or so of
trying to get it right, I got rid of it.

There was a guy who lived just a few houses down the street named Bill
Pickford. My dad was his attorney and he had two Shelby 427 side-oiler Cobras.
I got to drive one of them a few times and it was always in my mind that I
could build something like it. Wrong.

Pickford died in 1973 of brain cancer. His wife offered one of the Cobra's
to my dad for $7,000.00. He bought a Porsche instead. I never forgave him
for that, although I had a long-running affair with Porsches (I've had 9 of
them and sold the last shortly after I got married.)

If you name an official replacement part, it is gospel. Then all afficianados with the "disintrested eye" can sleep soundly with a complete piece.

Now who made those screws ?

They were made by Bulgin along with mellotron plugs, sockets and control knobs. They ceased manufacture years ago. We still have the smaller round knob made in quantity from the original mould for the Vol, Tone and Pitch pot on the M4000 and as a spare for owners around the globe.

I seriously doubt that it was manufactured just for the Mellotron. Martin would probably know. The original
manufacturer may be long out of business and if Martin can’t find them I bet no one can.

Mellotrons and old cars. (Was "lighted switch" thread.)

2012-02-22 by Jim Blair

I wonder how many of us Tron guys are also into vintage cars.

I'm a Lotus fan. I've had a couple of Europas. Love em. The 67 S1 that I drive at the moment is powered by a fuel injected Toyota 4AGE, and has NO original electrical. lol

It is scary powerful, weighs nothing, and is totally reliable. Really fun car.

It was a 1964 model as I recall. I didn't own that one; it belonged to a friend. We complete rebuilt that car from the frame up as I did with the XK-150, which I did own. I forgot that I (briefly) owned a Triumph TR-3 back around 1971 or so, but it was stolen not long after I replaced the drop-down top, reupholstered it and repainted it. Never got it back. A year later I bought a '59 MGA and we put a narrowed Pontiac rear end in it and a 302 Chevrolet Z-28 motor. There wasn't much Lucas left when I was finished with it. It was a bit too much motor for the car. Often, under vigorous acceleration from a rolling or standing start, or when banging through the gears, the doors would open from the excessive torque. Scary! So I welded the doors closed and put a roll bar in it. That was an improvement, but the frame was still not up to the task, so off came the body and out came the welding torch. I tried everything I could think of to stiffen that frame, but I could never completely solve the torque issue and handling could be a tad unpredictable at times. The thing was a rocket and just plain scared the shit out of everyone but me. It was a cool looking car with flared fenders and huge tires (at the time) and I called it the "poor man's Cobra," which, except for brute power, it was most certainly not. Finally, after a year or so of trying to get it right, I got rid of it.

There was a guy who lived just a few houses down the street named Bill Pickford. My dad was his attorney and he had two Shelby 427 side-oiler Cobras. I got to drive one of them a few times and it was always in my mind that I could build something like it. Wrong.

Pickford died in 1973 of brain cancer. His wife offered one of the Cobra's to my dad for $7,000.00. He bought a Porsche instead. I never forgave him for that, although I had a long-running affair with Porsches (I've had 9 of them and sold the last shortly after I got married.)

I'd just love a mid to late 60's MGB or even a Midget or Bug Eye Sprite. What else? '64 LeMans convertible, 68 or 69 Goat, 1970 Chevy c-10 pickup (modified). My brother used to have a '63 Vette. Scared the life out of me. I come from a family of motorheads. I've never owned anything sexier than a Mini Cooper. Too many instruments to take care of I guess.

I grew up around cars. We only had Packards (three 1941's and 2 1956's,
an Executive and a Patrician) until my older brother bought a Pontiac GTO.
One of the many interesting car-nut customers at my dad's service
station garage (where I worked off-and-on for many years) included Bob
Dunlap who was the founding Secretary of the Ameican Bugatti Club - what
a great character. I got to ride in his Type 37A open wheel GP car
around the streets of Glendale, Cal. Nothing quite like that experience.
[Bob's passed - Jay Leno owns it now and you can see it (and a picture
of Bob) on his website.]
1961 Facel Vega Facellia F2, 1966 Pontiac GTO, 1967 Pontiac GTO, 1968
Olds 442 conv, 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge, 1973 Pontiac Judge, 1960
Studebaker Champ pickup, 1972 Honda Z600.
Gary - what years 442 did you have?
My uncle had a Lotus Cortina - in the US, that was a major plain-jane
sleeper.
Ah....cars.

RE: [newmellotrongroup] Mellotrons and old cars. (Was "lighted switch" thread.)

2012-02-22 by Gary Brumm

I think the 442 I had was a 67’ but not sure…will have to look to see if I have pictures. It had factory Hurst linkage with the T shifter just like I had in my old Corvettes.

I also seem to remember it had a factory fiberglass hood. It was gold that’s about all I remember and it knocked down a power pole without hardly making a dent….

but that’s another story…… J

I grew up around cars. We only had Packards (three 1941's and 2 1956's, an Executive and a Patrician) until my older brother bought a Pontiac GTO.
One of the many interesting car-nut customers at my dad's service station garage (where I worked off-and-on for many years) included Bob Dunlap who was the founding Secretary of the Ameican Bugatti Club - what a great character. I got to ride in his Type 37A open wheel GP car around the streets of Glendale, Cal. Nothing quite like that experience. [Bob's passed - Jay Leno owns it now and you can see it (and a picture of Bob) on his website.]
1961 Facel Vega Facellia F2, 1966 Pontiac GTO, 1967 Pontiac GTO, 1968 Olds 442 conv, 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge, 1973 Pontiac Judge, 1960 Studebaker Champ pickup, 1972 Honda Z600.
Gary - what years 442 did you have?
My uncle had a Lotus Cortina - in the US, that was a major plain-jane sleeper.
Ah....cars.
