is this typical?

is this typical?

2008-02-15 by jonesalley

I like to have a variety of media formats in my home studio, and I just acquired a mint, late-model Alesis ADAT with all manuals, original accessories and packaging, which I primarily plan to use as an archiving tool and a lasershow development platform. It cost me the princely sum of $20.50 on eBay and as it's a local seller, I don't even have to pay for shipping. Have these things dropped THAT far in value or was that an unusual deal?

they HAVE dropped that far.
tape-based digital multitracks are dinosaurs already.
the ONLY place i know that still uses them at all is
a local post-house that uses a DA88 for recording
the 'stems' for film projects.

[for those unfamiliar, 'stems' are the separate elements
that make up a soundtrack: dialogue, ambient sound, special
effects, music. they are used when making alernate language
mixes so they ONLY have to re-record dialogue and can keep
all the other elements the same]

other than that, i have not seen anyone use an ADAT or DA88
type machine for at least 5 years - possibly a bit longer.

you got a good deal if the thing is useful to you.
just because other have moved on/abandoned then, does not
invalidate its usefulness to you.

Thank you! It seemed like a decent deal. I waste more than that on junk
food some days...

so...let me get this straight...
so if I use a DA88 and record the stems...
then find a way to bus them via cell phone to other locations for projects there...
would that require Stem-Cell Research, or is everything already in place...or do I just don't get it???

You will want to buy some blank tapes. Quantegy / Ampex are
discontinuing DAT and ADAT tapes and what looks like most R-R audio tapes.

ADAT uses S-VHS tape.
there is nothing special about it.
just look for quality [as in 'a brand you have heard of'] S-VHS tapes.
