Just because I like the Mellotron and Hammond playing together: http://tinyurl.com/7h4758e Bernie

Dear all It looks like I'll be playing abroad later this year, without being able to take my regular rig (Jupiter-8, Taurus pedals, generic fake Hammond and piano). I'm hoping to be able to use my Pro-One (which will fit in a suitcase) to fake the Taurus and a mono synth patch I need, but I'll have to hire something locally to cover everything else, i.e. overdriven Hammond, piano and synth strings. I'm almost entirely ignorant of modern synths, so does anyone have any recommendations for something I can ask for? Assuming I get any choice, that is :-) Many thanks in advance, Andy T.

I'd go for the Nord Electro 3, or is it 4 now? Great organs and piano, plus you might find a pretty good string synth loaded, or if you are very lucky you might find the rather impressive tron sound library loaded. I use mine all the time it's great. Andy K Andy Kinch kinchmusic@aol.com

Not so much a reply as a related request for information. I am thinking of buying an analog synth at the moment I'm using a Microkorg which I am very happy with but I think I would like a true analog synth. I've been looking at the Dave Smith Tetra and the Mopho and I am hoping to try out the Moog Slim Phatty soon. Anybody have any recommendations? Mark ________________________________

Hey Andy, You might want to take a look at the Kurzweil PC-3 line. The new firmware has the organs sounding great, the pianos are, well, Kurzweil (outstanding), and other synth stuff, even analog type stuff is quite good (even Mellotron sounds). Nord has some great all-purpose keyboards as well! Try them out and see what works for you..... Gary

Mark, You need a nice Moog Satellite, and I'd be happy to sell you one. It's real analog, and real inexpensive. Only one oscillator, though. It's the perfect compliment to your Mellotron. It's versatility is only equaled by it's price. Frank In a message dated 8/3/2012 5:50:53 P.M. You are probably right Frank, they seem to make some very great sounds, nice demo below. However I think one 1970's keyboard is enough and I really do want a couple of oscillators and at least an arpegiator if not a sequencer built in, polyphonic would be nice as well, although not essential. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp7jBWamkIE Mark PS If I change my mind I'll be in touch. ________________________________ From: "lsf5275@aol.com" <lsf5275@aol.com> To: newmellotrongroup@yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, 4 August 2012 11:01 AM Subject: Re: [newmellotrongroup] OT modern synth recommendations Mark, You need a nice Moog Satellite, and I'd be happy to sell you one. Clavia just started shipping the Electro 4D 61. I have one here at home :-) just for a few days. )-: All the organ and piano samples are wonderful. Leslie simulator is good. There's an overdrive with the speaker simulator that adds just the right kind of crunch. There are 128 programs that you can overwrite with your own. In the default factory programs, there's an overdrive B3, an overdrive Vox and an overdrive Farfisa with flanger. All magnificent. There's a pipe / church organ program that's VERY good as well. All of the 128 programs can have their own unique FX settings. Kinda nice but the default factory programs ALL have too much reverb. (Too wet...dripping in fact.) It took about 30 minutes for me to edit all of the programs to remove or dry up the reverb. Mellotron strings choir and flute are included in the factory programs and you can load a bunch of other tron / chamberlin sounds from the free Nord sample library. In order to get the mellotron samples to sound right to my ear, I had to boost the top end EQ way up. Other than that, pretty damn good samples I think. I've had a Voyager for about 7 years now and I've been really happy with it. Built like a tank with lots of flexibility and that great Moog sound. I've played a Prophet 08 and liked what I heard. If I go poly, I'd definitely take a second look at that. Hope that helps. Rick ________________________________

For anyone interested in the latest features of the "new" Electro, here is a link to a recent YouTube video which is fairly comprehensive. I "think" that using this keyboard and a dedicated synth and / or a synth that also has the capability to make other conventional keyboard sounds would cover most peoples needs when performing live. Thanks Rick, I think I'm coming round to the idea of Tetra module, which essentially is half a Prophet ie 4 voices rather than 8 but otherwise the same. New Zealand is a small place, I have to travel to Wellington ( 3.5 hour sea crossing ) to try out any keyboards and there isn't a great selection there. I'm hoping to be able to directly compare the Moog Slim Phatty and the Tetra this next trip, they have a Voyager module and Prophet 08 but they are both a bit more than I want to spend. I'm playing in Oslo, Norway around November/December (should be nice'n'cold!). Thanks for all the suggestions - I suspect I'll end up asking for a Nord, although I'll need to know it's got a decent, fairly strident string synth patch on board! The Kurzweil's a good call, too. I'm sure the new Prophet's wonderful, but won't do what I need at all, sadly. Amusing to note that NO-ONE recommended anything Japanese! :-) Of course, now I'll find out that we're taking the overnight ferry and I can take my full rig... Thanks again, Andy T.
