Hi all I noticed this CL ad picture matches the one in the current eBay ad. Draw your own conclusions. -Bruce D.

If it was in mint condition, it would be worth about $5000. Maybe it is in mint condition, maybe it isn't. If it isn't, it could still require another $1000 or $2000 to bring it up to snuff. Why waste the cash on this machine when you can buy a brand new M4000 for just a little more?

My big "bugaboo" is that he never shows the whole instrument, to the point it's gotta be intentional. It seems to play and function well, and the sounds are solid (albeit with a very audible "click" at the start of every note - might the start points be slightly out of adjustment?), but he never shows an inch of the control panel or the cabinet, except the small side panel by the keyboard... nothing but the low end of the keyboard. Most owners LOVE to show off their "babies." Gotta ask, what's he hiding? From what he shows, it could be a "skele-tron" mounted on a bench somehow. Maybe his kids finger-painted all over it. Maybe it's one of Wakeman's infamous "Flameotrons" with newer "innards!" It leads one to wonder... (to the dulcit sounds of very dark, mysterious, Crimson-esque violins, far away but right inside your brain... )

Ahhh, no. We know what theirs look like.

What i found odd was that this guy had zero interest in "mellotron chat". He wanted to know what i "had". (To offer , i assume. ) who can avoid tech banter when it comes to one of these? He was brusque and had no interest in any gear-towards purchase. I told him it was priced too high and he claimed he sees them selling for $5000. On ebay . Oh well. Sucks that i have the bug again. I let mine (in better shape than this one) go for $2000. Better keep looking. But damn! Who wouldn't want to chat about 'trons?

I sold my M400 about a year ago for $4000. It was completely rebuilt by Jerry Korb. After the rebuild, I replaced the drive belt and all the pinch rollers. I can positively guarantee that it was as good as a new machine. It was difficult to find a buyer even at that price. This guy obviously has no idea what goes into a top dollar Mellotron. I think it would be crazy to pay what he's asking for a machine that's in questionable shape.

I sold a Mellotron on Ebay for $4000+ a few years ago, but this one was owned by Daniel Lanois and had been used by Martha and The Muffins and Brian Eno, along with letters of provenence.

It was in good shape but not perfect. I told the buyer that it would need some work, and that I could do it if he wanted, but it would not be included in the sale price mainly because I had to travel to do it.
It was the provenance that sold him on the Mellotron, not it's condition so I would say occasionally there are exceptions, but not many.

Anyway, I wonder if maybe this guy is selling it for someone else?

Hi folks-
Yeah, not enough information for sure. Needs more pictures, too.
I wonder if the DMI decal was original to this "Americanized & improved) machine. ;-)

Wow. If he got $5500 for THAT, I'm gonna ask $30K for mine! Ya think someone was a chain-smoker? That looks like a a Rat-Pellet Special! He could've at least cleaned up the cabinet a bit, eh? Agreed, too, more pictures. Wonder what the INSIDE is like? That would be fun to see, I'm sure...

Would Martin or anyone at the factory know? Is there a serial number dating guide for Mellotrons? Never even thought to look for one til now. Mine is #1485, not that much later. Bought it used, of course, but I was told only "Early-'70s," which made sense. It was pretty much showroom clean, so it wasn't old & beaten up. I bought it around mid-late 1976 to early 1977, from a fellow in North Hollywood, CA. (I'm shocked I don't remember the exact date & time!!)

Just to remind folks that we sell scans of individual M400 birth certificates from the original factory records for GBP30. We have most of them available.

The serial number on this M400 appears to be #1423. Anyone care to guess the
year it was made? He lowered the price a little.

My #1145 is late '73, so I'd guess about a year later?

My serial number is 1697, but its age of arrested development is more like #350 :)

EMI made them only for a very short time, so if they had any records, I'm not sure any were kept.

I'm pretty sure EMI manufacturing spans the middle of 1972 to 1973.
