Bearing in mind that my favourite Genesis tracks are "Seven stones" and "Times Table" is there likely to be anything on "Selling England by the Pound" that I might like? Mark

Don't know about you, but I suspect that's the first time most of us heard the 8-voice choir. Sure set me back on my butt!

Amen, brother. Agreed. It's my favorite. There are full length Selling England songs on youtube if you search by the album title. Bernie

The songs are nowhere near as murky and shadowed as the earlier stuff and there's LOTS of really classic Mellotron parts. Thankfully, John Burns did a nice job producing SEBTP. http://www.johnnieburns.co.uk/ JB: Tony was such a strong musician. I remember, one time, there was a fairy odd chord on the organ on a backing track. I recall saying, "Christ, that's discordant!" and Tony said, "Don't worry, its fine. Wait until I put the piano part on top." When he did, suddenly, it worked beautifully. It all came into place. I thought he was amazing. He did have some very strange chords and sequences. Until he had done all of his parts An overdub Moog or synth or whatever, it wouldn't quite make sense. Then he would put the top line on and you'd say, "Fucking hell, that's brilliant!"

Ok, sounds like I'll have to get hold of it. What is everybody's opinion regarding the various mellotron choirs. I only have access to M-tron at present, my favourite is the split choir which is the 8 choir but with the trebles on the right and the basses on the left, gets abit awkard in the middle but I am planning to have one choir sound and this seems the best compromise.
MarkThe only band I ever heard use the split choir are Scottish '80s proggers Pallas, who were actually quite good before perfecting 'stadium prog' (played in clubs) later in the decade. Not bad, but awkward when crossing the split point!

Pallas? Yeah, most of 'The Sentinel' is pretty good, I don't think it's dated too well though. It's wonderful if you need cheering up and nothing but cheesy pitchshifted narration can hit the spot. Especially the bit about the giant glass dome.. And the bog-standard 8-voice still rules my world.. They take a turn toward guitar on this lp and begin thinking about the keyboard parts in a far more balanced and useful way. Cinema Show is a good example.
