M400 noise

M400 noise

2008-07-27 by Hessel Herder

Hi guys,

My M400 # 126 has been behaving somewhat strange the last couple of days;

After the warmup ( she still has a CMC 4 card, runs pretty stable ),she'll play fine,no probs.Sometimes, however, after some time, there'll be a 'fade out' of direct signal and at the same time a 'fade in' of noise. The direct sound remains at low level, the noise at high level.Any idea hat could cause this?A preamp issue or something with the output stage?

The machine has been restored recently, a great job, also fixed the headblock to preamp lead issue, which I believe is one of the possible reasons for the behaviour mentioned above.

The only thing I can think of is that it maybe has something to do with my swell pedal, had that refitted with a new pot recently.

Any ideas?

Cheers,H

Try unplugging the swell pedal. Please report back after doing so.

In all seriousness, you might want to check the PAL connecter that plugs
into the preamp to make sure you the shield and center wire are making proper
contact.

Please do it with the machine off. Wiggling wires is not usually a good idea
when it is hot. The other way to check is with an ohm meter. Unplug the head
block and connect one lead to the connector center pin and the other end on
the center wire where it is soldered to the tape heads. You should get a null
reading. Wiggle the wire and check again. Same thing with the sleeve. If you
get anything else, your connection is bad.

Thanx Frank

I've isolated the problem ,it's gotta be the pedal.I ran the machine
yesterday without it and it behaved great, no audio drops.

Do you know if the pedal can cause some kind of short or feedback that
results in the level drop / noise increase?

Mind that, when when the problem occurs, and I disconnect the pedal, thye
machine stays at low level / high noise.
