Hi, all-
I noticed this auction, too. I especially liked the
cabinet-quality angle iron between the side & back.
Maybe there are 7 more! It is interesting to note how
a 122 lb. instrument, plus the case (& pallet, muff, &
pedal), grew to a 350 lb shipping weight. We'll see
what happens.

The seller says it's serial #583 and he purchased it new in 1976. If that's true, it must have been sitting around in a music shop for 3 or 4 years before he bought it. I bought #500 "new" around 1973, only to find out from Dallas Arbiter in NJ that it had previously been on tour. Really not that unusual for big-ticket keyboards. Piano stores sometimes have to hold grands (especially full-sized ones) in inventory for several years before they find a buyer. > That struck me as a bit odd as well. Mine is #581 and that's estimated > as dating back to about early 1972.

I remember several years ago there were similar posts here by folks wondering who paid $2900 for M400 #379 on eBay, also unrestored. Well, that would be me, and I recall feeling a mixture of relief that I finally owned one, and concern that people seemed to think I'd grossly overpaid to get it. If the new owner is here, then you have my heartfelt congratulations. Don't look back. The truth is that for most of us, the days of waiting until you happen to come across one in a dusty basement where the owner has no idea what the silly thing is are over. If they ever existed, eBay put a stop to that. I waited *years*. When the opportunity finally arose, I did what I had to do and I'm totally satisfied with the decision. -Jamie --- In newmellotrongroup@yahoogroups.com, "Bernie" <kornowicz@...> wrote:

Agreed, once again. There are many sacrifices aside from money that obsession will present. I paid $1800 (US) for my EMI that had been through all the best hands and eventually dismissed as unfixable. I'd have done anything for any mellotron and just had to make it happen. After $1000 and a lot of blood, sweat and key-twisting later (and a few calls to Markus) it's running pretty nicely. More importantly, I learned a tremendous deal about the problems invloved and feel I can conquer just about any and all melltron foibles. Yes, I'd love an M400, but it just isn't within my means. Yes, I settled for an EMI, but I have a mellotron, it works well, and that's more than most can claim. Gave up trying to find a 'tron by chance, so I
bought one on Ebay. But, I have a buddy who is
extremely lucky at finding all sorts of unexpected
stuff at garage sales, auctions, and estate sales. I
just handed over the search to him, and am hoping for
the best. I FULLY expect him to find one (cheap),
whichever model it may be ;-)

Certainly an unusual voice selection, it would be interesting to know what the band did with it. And "M400N?" N? It does seem a pretty clean survivor except for the knob, so a 6K BIN with a pro instrument shipper for delivery included in the price probably isn't that far out of line with end result of the 4K+ instruments that have been snapped up of late.

Hi all-
Looks like an SMS-3 card. It's mounted wrong, of course, fins should be vertical.
I think the copper was an RFI noise shield, and the user had a noisy electronic device sitting on the top.
Mine (#1221), was also missing a keypad arm. The spring section of the arm must break easily.
As you've seen, the "perfect" Chamby is baaaack. Let's keep ignoring it, until it's free...

I wonder if the cabinet is out of whack? It does look pretty clean though. Bernie

I see the seller of the M400 is also selling tapes. (ebay 170235479076)
Not the entire frame, just individual tapes. Buy it now for $50 each tape, in case you are just hapening to be missing a certain note of a String/Flute/Sax tape (a common combo which everyone has, I'm sure. Oh yeah, which String or Flute or Sax are we talking about?) Only 2 missing tapes. That makes $1650.00 for all 33 of the tapes. The frame and case are not for sale.
Talk about a shot in the dark.

Damn. I thought you were joking at first, Bruce. Tell you what I'll do. I'll sell my individual notes (and I've got all 35 of them!) for just $30 each - that's a savings of 40% compared to this clown - and will give the right buyer the entire set for just $900! And they'll arrive in their very own cardboard box! I'm ready to make deals and you just can't lose! johnb 1407 Bruce Daily wrote:

Hey John-
I also have a similar shoe box o' tapes- all 35. Can these really be worth that much on ebay? I could buy a new frame with tapes for the profit!

Yum! Add a little roasted garlic and basil, and 3 min in a saucepan! --- On Sun, 7/6/08, john barrick <astroboy@cinci.rr.com> wrote: From: john barrick <astroboy@cinci.rr.com> Subject: Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: eBay M400 To: newmellotrongroup@yahoogroups.com Date: Sunday, July 6, 2008, 6:13 PM I'll give you 10 pounds each for those!
