But why?
And what was Billy Joe and the singer throwing off the
bridge

PS I think this thread is starting to fragment between
the 2 lists, any chance of us all getting back on one
list?

From Wikipedia: "In 1975, [Bobbie] Gentry told author Herman Raucher that she hadn't come
up with a reason for Billie Joe's suicide when she wrote the song. She has stated in numerous
interviews over the years that the focus of the song was not the suicide itself, but rather the
matter-of-fact way that the narrator's family was discussing the tragedy over dinner,
unaware that Billie Joe had been her boyfriend."

So there! I always felt this song's nuvo-existential lyrics in a somewhat Dali-esque fashion
showed a certain vapidity on the part of the song's lyricist. This proves it beyond a doubt.

Thanks Rick.
Shall I start a 3rd group now?

Mr. B., I love it when you use big words!
And thanks very much for asking, Clay, I am incredibly flattered and humbled. No new stuff yet, but very soon. I don't know if I had shared these yet, but some proggy covers are at www.myspace.com/flicktheband if anyone is interested. I am finally beginning the process of assembling the pile of gear I have purchased in the last year into the project studio of my dreams, and will be getting some of my own compositions with prominent Mellotron out for consideration over the rest of this year.

There is a narrator.

Billie Joe was a guy who knocked up his girlfriend Who is the narrator . No
one approved of him. He got the her pregnant and they were both outcasts. Her
parent's wanted her to marry the preacher, but they were in love. She most
probably either miscarried or the baby was born and they destroyed it to save
her reputation. Billie Joe couldn't handle it and killed himself. He was from
up on Choctaw Ridge (the bad side of town) and her father disapproved.

It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day
I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was balin' hay
And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat
And Mama hollered out the back door "Y'all remember to wipe your feet"
And then she said "I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge"
"Today Billie Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

And Papa said to Mama as he passed around the blackeyed peas
"Well, Billie Joe never had a lick of sense, pass the biscuits, please"
"There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow"
And Mama said it was shame about Billie Joe, anyhow
Seems like nothin' ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge
And now Billie Joe MacAllister's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

And Brother said he recollected when he and Tom and Billie Joe
Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show
And wasn't I talkin' to him after church last Sunday night?
"I'll have another piece of apple pie, you know it don't seem right"
"I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge"
"And now you tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

And Mama said to me "Child, what's happened to your appetite?"
"I've been cookin' all morning and you haven't touched a single bite"
"That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today"
"Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way"
"He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge"
"And she and Billie Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

A year has come 'n' gone since we heard the news 'bout Billie Joe
And Brother married Becky Thompson, they bought a store in Tupelo
There was a virus going 'round, Papa caught it and he died last Spring
And now Mama doesn't seem to wanna do much of anything
And me, I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge
And drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge

And there you have it. Frank's put paid to that account, so can we get
on to something important like an in depth analysis of Mrs. Brown You've
Got A Lovely Daughter?
