Yes, restored ones are very consistent, as is the M4000. Frank In a message dated 9/30/2009 2:41:28 A.M. Having read Mike's info on his website I know that mine isn't the only one to do this. Does the M4000 always play perfectly?

Mike, do you still have a CM10 in your tron? I have exactly the same
tuning problems with my tron and had thought it was due to the CM10. Being
12,000 miles from help and mechanically challenged I decided to put up with it
rather install the new card and then possibly a new motor.
Mark,
Get a SMS-2 or SMS-5 and a seamless belt from Streetly and be done with it.
Also make sure the belt tension is right. A little too much will lead to
pitch drift and a not quite enough will do the same. Installing an SMS board
and rewiring the power supply is a piece of cake. Your motor is most
probably good enough. The difference will be amazing.
Frank
See all this crap?
Once you install the SMS board you can get rid of it all except these two
capacitors. I have since replaced them because they were leaking.
And look how clean the power supply looks now?
I also ditched the PAL connector and replaced it with a nice gold plated
RCA connector after this photo was taken
While your there, replace the Bulgin with a standard IEC mains socket.2009-09-30 by Mark Pring

Not true Mark. I can walk you right through the process. It's a piece of cake. You don't have to remove the other capacitors, although they are rendered useless by the SMS board. All of the modifications can be done in about 20 minutes. Modifying the power supply will have no effect on the preamp or any other components and you won't fry anything. Mellotrons are amazingly simple, but even if you don't understand what you're doing, as long as you follow simple instructions, nothing will go wrong. You are not going to break or damage anything. I have walked a lot of folks on our list through all kinds of improvements on there machines and once done, what originally seemed complicated and risky worked out just fine. Thanks Frank, I might be having second thoughts, I'll contact you off list if I build up sufficient courage.
Cheers
