Mike:

These are a pretty startling omissions! Thanks for the side by side comparisons.

I think I like the new mixes. The transitions aren't as harsh. The
pitchbend does seem to be cleaned up, but it is still there. I think those two
parts of the song you like are the parts I wasn't as fond off. The new
mixes flow better to me.

Interesting. I like the originals better. Too much Mellotron
dissonance in the revised pitch bend...

In Epitaph I wonder why Fripp left out that High E note... Having it
there seems to cap the crescendo and transition nice into the Em
gloomy chord of the verse... The new version offers no such transition
note... seems too abrupt.

Wow! that's a big difference on both tunes. Both are memorable moments that
 define the songs. Shame!

So Strange that the Mellotron line does not resolve to the high E... I
don't know how anyone could claim that these changes make the songs
more seamless...

They are there, they are just not quite as pronouced in the new mixes. I could hear the High E, but it was now underneath the lower Mellotron Chords at the beginning of the next musical phrase. Those chords are now more prominent after the sting of the ascending solo Mellotron line.

Thanks, Mike!
Classic is better in both cases.
I prefer the classic pitch bend mix. During the volume swell, it has seperation and ambience that grows to envelope the listener, whereas the revised version seems to swell in volume from the center only. And yes, the pitchbend is there in the new mix, but quite buried.

You just cannot beat the original. Personally, I'd like to
know how they did the pitch bend, seems to be too many notes
to free a hand up to turn the pitch. Our band reluctantly
agreed to do a "prog" set next year, and Epitaph hopefully
will end the set. I've tried to figure out what parts to do
with only one guitar and bass and drummer, results of first
attempt on YOUTUBE. Doug

Thanks, Mike, for doing this. It makes for a very interesting
side-by-side comparison.

The question is 'which original'? I'be had two copies of the original Island pressing for years and they are great, but the 30th anniversary pressing on CD beat it hands down. The story is that the latest has gone back to visit earlier generations of multitracks, yet it sounds worse in the mix. There is no question that the sound quality is better, but what has been done with it?
